Google is expanding its Android theft protection capabilities globally, but with a focus on user experience. The company learned from a Brazil beta test that users in different environments have varied levels of interest in anti-theft features. Three key features, Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock, and Remote Lock, are now available for activation on compatible Android devices running at least Android 10.
Google is rolling out new Android theft detection features globally, but they won't be automatically enabled on every compatible device. Insights from a beta test in Brazil revealed that users in metropolitan and rural areas behaved differently, prompting developers to prioritize user experience and avoid unnecessary friction for those less interested in anti-theft software.
The company is focusing on three key features that Android owners can activate: Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock, and Remote Lock. These features leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to identify potential theft scenarios. The AI model is trained on data gathered from simulated theft scenarios and real-world traces of devices during such incidents. This allows the system to recognize patterns indicative of smartphone theft. The AI model is constantly evolving, with developers continuously adding new theft scenarios to the training data as criminal tactics change. With the global launch of these anti-theft features, Google aims to learn more about how diverse smartphone users interact with these options. To activate these features, users must ensure their Android device runs at least Android 10. Adding a passcode to the device is also recommended. Users can then navigate to the Theft protection settings within the phone's settings app and toggle on the desired features. Theft Detection Lock automatically locks the screen if it detects potential robbery based on movement patterns and Wi-Fi or Bluetooth disconnection. Offline Device Lock forces the phone into the lock screen up to twice a day if internet access is unexpectedly cut off or airplane mode is activated. This prevents thieves from disabling remote data wiping capabilities. Remote Lock allows users to quickly lock their phone from any device by visiting android.com/lock and entering their phone number. However, this feature is limited to two activations per day and requires an online connection.
