After locking in three state titles with Anchorage Christian School, Sayvia Sellers left Alaska as the all-time leading scorer in girls’ basketball. Now she is showing the University of Washington what the Last Frontier already knows.
ANCHORAGE , Alaska - After locking in three state titles with Anchorage Christian School, Sayvia Sellers left Alaska as the all-time leading scorer in girls’ basketball, dropping a total of 2,651 points.
However, Sellers was not always in love with basketball, originally being interested in gymnastics as a child. “I wasn’t really into it, but I was really close with all my brothers, and they all played,” Sellers said.Having seven other siblings, many also involved in sports, Sellers said she was used to competition from a young age. According to Sellers’s mom, Tamika, she first noticed her daughter’s talents after she attended several out-of-state basketball camps.“I just was like, ‘well, this this is just her. This is this is what she loves’.” After a record-breaking career in high school, Sellers declared for the University of Washington, attracted to the school by the team’s close bond.“It felt like a family environment and that’s the place that I wanted to be.” While Sellers said the team spent several years rebuilding itself, the work appears to have paid off, as the Huskies were ranked #6 in the NCAA tournament. “This is something you dream about when you’re a kid or whenever you start taking basketball seriously, so it’s really special,” she said. Sellers has made the most of her time in Washington, averaging 18 points a game in the 2025-26 season. The Huskies would fall from the bracket after losing to Texas Christian University on Sunday. However, the loss isn’t getting Sellers down. “She’s an extremely mature young lady, and I guarantee you that by the time they got done, she’s always trying to figure out how she can be better,” Tamika said. While still in the Pacific Northwest, Sayvia said she feels that she’s bringing a part of Alaska with her to Washington. “When I’m playing, I definitely think about all the people back home and all the little kids looking up to me. It’s special,” she said.“They respected that she is going to be an amazing player, and they just added little bits and pieces of her.” Sellers has one year left at the University of Washington.
