Apple’s latest release is the newest pair of over-ear headphones: AirPods Max 2. Here’s all you need to know.
The new headphones are identical to the first-generation model with USB-C — the colors were different for the original headphones with Lightning. As such, if you want to show off, you’ll need to tell people you have the latest model, or carry the box, perhaps.
When the carry case was released, it’s fair to say that not everybody liked it. It’s a light, soft material case that only covers the ear cups, not the headband, which suddenly become a handle. The benefit of this is that it adds almost no size or weight to the headphones, unlike rival cases. On the other hand, the earcups have to lie flat – you can’t fold them in on themselves as some over-ears permit. That’s something Sony recently reintroduced for its latest WH-1000XM6 cans.3. The Key Upgrade Is The Apple H2 Chip There’s also a new high-dynamic-range amplifier but it’s the H2 chip which provides the major differences. These include a noticeable change to Active Noise Cancellation, just as there was in the most recent AirPods Pro 3, for instance.The new capabilities include the popular Live Translation which means that if someone’s talking to you in a language you don’t know, the headphones will translate it and speak to you in your language in your ear. The software is smart enough to know that context is key, so it waits until it hears a phrase before its translates. It also shows the words as text on the iPhone. You need to download the relevant languages in advance. These include Spanish, French, German and Korean.Features previously exclusive to in-ear AirPods have reached the over-ears. You can nod or shake your head to accept or reject phone calls, for instance. And if the Camera app on the iPhone is open, the Digital Crown on the headphones can trigger the shutter . Studio quality audio recording, as Apple describes it, is also made possible on these headphones, thanks to changes in iOS 26 and the H2 chip. These are the main changes, with audio quality being the feature that will doubtless appeal to many. It’s worth noting that you need the latest iOS 26.4 software installed on your iPhone to make the most of all the new capabilities.
