Anchorage among first cities to go live with Federal Electronic Health Record in October rollout
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is rolling out a new digital system to manage veterans’ medical records, with Anchorage set to be among the first cities to go live. The VA is launching the Federal Electronic Health Record beginning in April.
The Anchorage rollout, along with Cleveland, is scheduled for Oct. 24. Prior to Anchorage, sites in Michigan, Ohio and Indiana will go live. “This is a digital record of all your health information that will enable us to provide veterans faster care, to our providers better care in the sense they’re not clicking and pasting and actually practicing medicine, and to the VA it will lead to standardization and improve patient safety,” Paul Lawrence, the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs Deputy Secretary, said. In March, VA Deputy Secretary Lawrence visited Anchorage. During his visit, he met with staff at the Colonel Mary Louise Rasmuson Campus of the Alaska VA Healthcare System to discuss the October rollout. The conversation, VA Affairs also added, was centered around challenges people were facing and expectations. “Right now, we’re beginning the training phase, where we go through and explain how your job is going to change because of the new system, what the new workflows look like, and how this will all come together,” Lawrence said.Staff training averages about 40 hours per person. According to Lawrence, the system will make a veteran’s medical information accessible to any provider, regardless of location. Previously, he said, veterans would have to re-share their medical history each time they visited a new provider. “Your doctors will log on, and all your information will be there. It’ll be as if you’re a senior provider in Alaska,” Lawrence said. Lawrence said the system should also streamline the transition from active duty to veteran status. The VA and the Department of Defense are on the same system, he said. “Ideally, we’re going to have your entire military record because the Department of Defense is on the same system. So, we’d like to have all your history so when you come visit us, you don’t have to keep telling the same story about what happened to you in service. We have it all there, so we don’t have to have the same conversations again,” Lawrence said. Lawrence said 13 sites will deploy in 2026, 26 sites in 2027, and the remainder through 2030.
