Gregg Brelsford is a the 18th candidate announce a run for Alaska governor. Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy, a Republican, is termed out from seeking reelection, spurring an already crowded race to replace him.
Brelsford, 75, is a former Anchorage municipal attorney, former Dillingham city manager and former manager of the Bristol Bay Borough. He is running as an independent. Brelsford has never held elected office. He previously ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. House of Representatives in 2022, and for the Alaska House in 1994. In a statement announcing his candidacy, Brelsford said he is concerned by the “harm that Republican leadership has done to K-12 schoolchildren and teachers.” He said education funding would be his top priority. The slate of other candidates in the Alaska governor’s race already included 12 Republicans, three Democrats and two nonpartisan candidates.Under Alaska’s election system, all candidates will appear on the same primary ballot. The top four vote-getters, regardless of party affiliation, will advance to the general election. The Republican candidates are former Labor Commissioner Click Bishop; former Anchorage Mayor Dave Bronson; former Revenue Commissioner Adam Crum; Lt. Gov. Nancy Dahlstrom; Matanuska-Susitna Borough Mayor Edna DeVries; former Palmer state Sen. Shelley Hughes; former Attorney General Treg Taylor; podiatrist Matt Heilala; businesswoman Bernadette Wilson; fisherman and author Henry Kroll; Palmer resident Bruce Walden; and former educator James Parkin of Angoon. The Democratic candidates are Anchorage Sen. Matt Claman, former Anchorage Sen. Tom Begich and former Sitka Rep. Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins. Candidates Meda DeWitt of Anchorage and Jessica Faircloth of Kasilof are not registered with a political party.
