Readers describe the symbolism of rainbow sidewalks, offers ways for ICE to help TSA agents and criticize the government shutting down a major wind energy project. Re: “End of the rainbows — Disappointment in Oak Lawn as crosswalk markings erased," Tuesday news story.
The removal of rainbow and other decorative crosswalks in Dallas has caused real pain in our community. For many, these crosswalks were never just paint. They were visible signs that LGBTQ+ people are seen, valued and that they belong.Their removal feels like erasure. It sends a message, whether intended or not, that LGBTQ+ lives and stories can be made less visible at a time when many already feel vulnerable. And yet, our faith reminds us that while symbols matter, they are not the source of our worth, and they cannot contain our witness. We are called to show up more boldly, to love more publicly and to advocate more persistently for a city where dignity is not symbolic but lived. If crosswalks are removed, then let our lives bear even clearer witness to justice, to compassion and to the sacred worth of every person. We call on leaders to listen and to recommit to inclusion, and on our community to stay engaged by organizing, speaking and building belonging.supports painted symbols on sidewalks but objects to the Ten Commandments being posted in school buildings? Whether this brand of journalism is fair or not is up to the readers, but it might be informative revealing whatDallas has the distinction of being home to five of I. M. Pei’s works which have made an indelible footprint in international art history. Those structures include our City Hall, One Dallas Center, Energy Plaza, Fountain Place and the spectacular Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center. Only New York City and Boston have more I.M. Pei works than Dallas.I.M. Pei passed away in 2019 at the age of 102, so we will not have the opportunity to add to our collection. These works are part of what defines Dallas as a city of culture and good taste. As for the round number estimate of $1 billion for repairs and modernization, please note that Notre Dame Cathedral burned down in 2019 and only took five years and $737 million to restore. Our City Hall has no stained glass, no sculptures, no gothic spires, no flying buttresses. For those who do not appreciate Pei’s brutalist architectural style, everyone doesn’t need to like it. People were horrified by the Eiffel Tower when it was erected for the 1889 World’s Fair, but it has become the iconic symbol of Paris. Pei’s Pyramide du Louvre also met with initial disapproval by some.Instead of paying ICE agents to stand around chit-chatting with one another at the nation’s airports and being a photo op to show how the president is hard at work for the American people, why not use those salaries to actually pay TSA agents and get the country moving again? Just wondering. It’s wonderful to see ICE officers stepping up to support TSA agents at the airport. Unfortunately, they appear to be hanging around not doing much. Let’s make them truly useful. I suggest “ICE Rides.” Using their taxpayer-owned SUVs, they can provide rides to and from work for TSA agents, rides for TSA family members to school, church and soccer practice, and, rides to appointments. Gas is expensive, and people who aren’t getting paid can’t afford to drive.ICE agents are at some airports at the request of the White House. At first, I did not recognize them without their masks on. There, they stand next to an unpaid TSA agent, earning their full salary to do what? At least they are not toting high-powered rifles, which I guess should make the flying public feel more secure and appreciative of their sacrifice. What a farce.Re: “Government to pay French company $1B to end wind leases — Administration makes deal for projects off the coasts of North Carolina, New York," Tuesday Metro & Business story. Under the heading “you can’t make this stuff up,” our current, anti-science, climate change denying administration pays French energy and petroleum company TotalEnergies $1 billion of your and my tax dollars to cease wind projects off the East Coast. Instead, TotalEnergies has agreed to use the payoff to finance the construction of a liquified natural gas plant. All this is happening as the price of a barrel of oil has skyrocketed, the pocketbooks of American consumers suffer at the gas pump, and the cost of all goods rise as a result of this war of choice in Iran. One of your recent letter writers put it best: “And just like that, we find that wind and solar energy do not need to travel through the Strait of Hormuz.”Dallas Morning News editorials are written by the paper's Editorial Board and serve as the voice and view of the paper.
