More than 22,000 Chugach Electric customers were without power as of 7 p.m. Friday night.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - More than 22,000 Chugach Electric customers were without power as of 7 p.m. Friday night. Chugach Electric confirmed to Alaska ’s News Source at 7:35 Friday night that the outage impacting their customers was from a load shedding event, which is a type of widespread outage caused by a major generation source being lost along the Railbelt.

Chugach explained after a previousafter the shed, telling customers there were indications of a trip on a transmission line south of Hope, causing the loss of power. The post went on to explain sheds are designed to maintain equilibrium: “...Generation has to be in balance with the electric load -- and avoids a much larger outage.” At 7:50 p.m. Chugach officials said power was already restored for most members, and the cause of the trip would be investigated in the coming days. The Matanuska Electric Association reported nearly 11,000 customers without power Friday night.
