South Anchorage candidates discuss how races could impact balance of power in the HouseANCHORAGE, Alaska - With a handful of election races set to decide which party controls the state House, a pair of South Anchorage races will likely play a significant impact.
In the District 9 race, which includes the Anchorage Hillside, where Rep. Laddie Shaw did not seek reelection, Nonpartisan candidate Ky Holland, who won the primary, says he wants to be part of a bipartisan majority like the Senate. In the Oceanview-Klatt neighborhood District 10 race, incumbent Republican Rep. Craig Johnson lost in the open primary to fellow Republican Chuck Kopp. They’ll face each other in the general election.
“I think the — probably overspending — and you know, the capital budget, we have a very sizable capital budget, I think that there’s social issues that we would be faced with that I don’t think Alaskans find to be terribly popular,” Johnson said. “80% of the population don’t want men in women’s sports, and I think that could be something that would be looked at. So there are those philosophical differences will come through.
