Professor Goes Viral Defending Gen X Against 'Worst Generation' Label
GENERATION XVIRAL VIDEOPROFESSOR CHESKO

Professor Chesko's viral video argues that Gen X is often misunderstood and possesses unique strengths.

A man has defended Generation X against claims that it's the worst generation, warning people not to underestimate them. In a now-viral video, Instagram user Professor Chesko (@thespeechprof) responded to a video by a Generation Z content creator that asserted 'Gen X is the worst generation.' Chesko strongly disagrees, providing several reasons why, in his view, Gen Xers are actually dangerous and even courageous.

Chesko explains in the video that the stereotype of Gen X is that they simply don't care about current events or what others think. He jokes that Gen Xers who survived their upbringing by Baby Boomers are 'the ones that survived' and 'fear nothing.' They also came of age before technology became widespread, meaning there's no digital footprint to haunt them. The Pew Research Center defines Gen X as those born between 1965 and 1980, while Gen Z were born between 1997 and 2012. Although Chesko is a Millennial (born between 1981 and 1996), he refers to himself as a 'cusp Millennial' as he's one of the oldest in his generation. This allowed him extensive exposure to Gen Xers, leading to many observations. After warning against 'picking a fight' with Gen X, Chesko's Instagram video went viral with over 5.8 million views and 229,800 likes at the time of writing. Newsweek has contacted Chesko via email for comment. Gen Xers experienced many significant events during their formative years, including the changing world order, economic difficulties, the AIDS epidemic in the 80s, the Cold War and the fall of the Berlin Wall, the first successful space shuttle flight, and the effects of a recession entering the workforce. According to Britannica, Gen X are often called the 'middle child' generation due to their smaller size compared to Boomers and Millennials. Gen Xers are often described as cynical due to the turbulent times they lived through in their youth. However, they also possess many positive stereotypes, as Britannica suggests they are resourceful, independent, and good at maintaining a work-life balance. While categorizing people by generations can be helpful, The Pew Research Center cautions that it can also lead to oversimplification. It's easy to focus on the differences between generations, but shared experiences should not be overlooked. Chesko's video sparked a wave of reactions from internet users, generating over 17,500 comments. Chesko jokingly stated that his perspective stems from both 'deep respect' and 'deep fear.' One comment read: 'Agree, Gen X is the last generation that can use all of the current tech and still survive with no power, paper maps, and perhaps fix some machinery.' Another Instagram user wrote: 'I think we can all agree, Gen X just has to turn off the wi-fi and we have already won.' As a proud Gen Xer, I refuse to be intimidated by a generation that can not read or write in cursive,' one commenter joked. Another social media user added: 'As a Gen X, this is hilariously correct.
