Google enhances its Gemini AI assistant for iPhone with six new lock screen widgets and direct Control Center access, aiming to attract users away from ChatGPT.
Google is making another attempt to lure iPhone users away from ChatGPT and towards its own AI assistant, Gemini . The latest update for the Google Gemini app on iPhone introduces six new lock screen widgets and direct access through the Control Center . These widgets significantly enhance the app's usability by providing quick access to Gemini 's valuable features on iPhone.
While this update doesn't yet include the Gemini Live video and screen-sharing capabilities showcased at MWC and expected to arrive on Android devices this month, the ability to use Gemini directly from the lock screen is a major convenience for iPhone users who rely on Gemini as their primary AI assistant. The six new widgets added to the iOS lock screen are: Type prompt, Talk Live, Open mic, Use camera, Share image, and Share file. Each widget enables unique interactions with Google's AI. Type prompt allows users to type questions without opening the app, while Talk Live enables direct voice conversations with Gemini, receiving audible responses. Open mic empowers users to set reminders, create calendar events, and perform other tasks. Tapping the Use camera widget captures an image of the surrounding environment and prompts Gemini to provide information about it. Share image and Share file widgets facilitate sharing images and files to gather insights, inspiration, create art, or initiate a conversation with Gemini.Considering Google's relatively slow rollout of Gemini features on iPhone, even delaying the release of a dedicated Gemini app for iPhone users, the introduction of these lock screen widgets is a welcome addition to the growing suite of AI features available on iPhone. This move also positions Gemini ahead of ChatGPT, as OpenAI's iPhone app currently offers only two widget options for the iPhone lock screen
