The city of Austin is reopening its cold weather shelters tonight and will continue to do so every night for the rest of the week.Registration Thursday closed
Registration Thursday will close at 8 p.m. at the One Texas Center on Barton Springs Road and South First Street. Warming shelters will remain open throughout the weekend as Central Texas faces overnight freezing temperatures.
David Gray, Austin's Homeless Strategies and Operations Director, emphasized the importance of these shelters, stating, "I know that our cold weather shelter operations are saving lives. They're keeping people safe, keeping people accommodated and warm, and also it's an opportunity for us to connect people to other services." Gray noted that approximately 850 people were sheltered during the most recent winter storm, which he believes saved lives. Gray added, "We still have four more nights of cold weather sheltering. So we're only halfway through our activation, but we stay ready for that." He assured that the shelters are well-equipped, saying, "We make sure we have adequate supplies, adequate mats and blankets and meals, etc. And we also make sure that our staff is good, that we're looking out for the mental health and well-being of our employees.""We rotate staff in and out every night make sure people are taking breaks and getting rest," he said. "That way when they're on call or when they're active, they're not making little mistakes. They're able to really focus on the clients."due to the freezing temperatures, Gray says someone was brought to the One Texas Center the very next day in a similar situation. "Our staff was able to help him thaw out, get him to a point where he was talking again and communicative and then we were able to get him the proper medical care that," he said.Man charged with murder after girlfriend's shooting death in southeast Austin A man has been charged in the shooting death of his girlfriend in southeast Austin on Monday. At 12:30 a.m. Monday morning, APD officers responded to reports ofFirst responders are at the scene of a crash in southwest Austin involving multiple people with critical injuries.Austin-Travis County EMS says that medics areA major collision in Buda involving three vehicles resulted in one person dead and another injured Wednesday night, according to the Hays County Sheriff's OfficA man was arrested Wednesday after Pflugerville police executed search and arrest warrants at a local business as part of a sexual assault investigation. The Austin Police Department is set to revise its cooperation policies with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement , focusing on individuals deemed dange
