Rochester, N.Y. — The moon is some 250,000 miles away from Earth, and NASA's Artemis II crew will be taking off Wednesday evening to slingshot around Earth's solo satellite., said Timothy Soine, director of product management at L3Harris in Rochester. "They are tactical radios that we built for military purposes but were obviously repurposed for space flight as well."Building the devices goes back to 2019, working with NASA and Lockheed Martin. Soine said two of the radios will be on board — one in the commander's seat, the other in the crew survival kit for emergencies. They communicate using VHF, UHF, AM and FM frequencies. "It is real-time communication," Soine said. "Hit a button and it immediately sends. Another part of this thing is it not just sends its voice communication, but it sends its GPS location."— three Americans and one Canadian — are due to take off from the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida, Wednesday at 6:24 p.m. If all goes as planned, they will splash back down April 10. That GPS will be critical upon reentry and splashdown when the 10-day mission wraps up. But the radios are not the only components L3Harris is contributing — there are about 108 other parts, including thrusters. "We have all of the motors that are actually blasting this thing off into space," said Soine. "All are L3Harris made, even on the crew module itself. All the engines are all L3Harris." The 7050 M L3Harris radio is displayed at L3Harris Technologies in Rochester, Tuesday, March 31, 2026. Soine said one of the coolest parts of the mission is the crew getting a glance at the dark side of the moon.Soine said NASA seems to be more invested in the moon again, for the first time in more than 50 years. He said to standby, as NASA has said there will be more manned moon missions to come — hopefully with support from L3Harris."Everybody's talking about it," Soine said. "We're super excited. We can't wait to watch. We can't wait to see it be successful. And, you know, get up there and come on back home safely."Chili, N.Y. — The Monroe County Sheriff's Office is asking for help finding two missing boys who have special needs. No serious injuries were reported after 11 vehicles were involved in a crash Monday on Interstate 590, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.A troubled shopping plaza on East Ridge Road is being partially shut down after the Irondequoit Town Board voted unanimously to declare it a public nuisance.
