The Rochester City Planning Commission revisited a proposal Monday to build a Verizon cellphone tower on the city's northeast side.

The street sign at the corner of Portland Avenue and Oneida Street in Rochester is pictured Monday, March 30, 2026. Rochester, N.Y. — The Rochester City Planning Commission revisited a proposal Monday to build a Verizon cellphone tower on the city's northeast side.

The company has applied for a second time to install a 60-foot wireless telecommunication tower at 936-952 Portland Avenue, where Joey's Auto Repairs is currently located. Verizon representatives said there is little to no existing coverage in and around where the tower would be. Councilmember Michael Patterson spoke out Monday against the installation, saying this proposal is a step down from the proposal that was rejected last August. "It actually looks worse than the original proposal," Patterson said. "They came back with a worse proposal saying it's a different proposal. It's different, but it's still bad and we don't want it." "We really don't have the time to come down here and fight cell phone towers," Patterson continued. "But we're going to come down and fight every time they show up."11 vehicles involved in crash on 590 during morning rush hour No serious injuries were reported after 11 vehicles were involved in a crash Monday on Interstate 590, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.Auburn, N.Y. — A correction officer is accused of bringing significant amounts of drugs to work at Cayuga Correctional Facility after a joint investigation byHenrietta, N.Y. — No injuries were reported after a fire Monday at a commercial building on East Henrietta Road.Injured Greece police K-9 finds new forever home with Army veteran Greece, N.Y. — A former police dog injured during a training event is now settling into his new home.
