"It keeps getting worse and worse. It’s crazy," said Marlon Paz of Huntington, New York.Rather than filling the tank, Paz only got five gallons at one station, saying"I want to find cheaper gas at a lower gas station."With the national average at $4.02 a gallon as of Tuesday afternoon, experts say the price may have reached levels that would impact consumer spending habits. "But $4 a gallon is the pain point for 60% of drivers. They said they would have to drive less, they would put off making a major purchase," said Robert Sinclair of AAA. In New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, the average isn't quite as high — but it is very close. At a gas station in the Long Island town of Huntington, a gallon of regular was $3.89 Tuesday morning. It jumped to $3.99 by the afternoon. That is right about the average across the region. Both New York and Connecticut had averages at $3.95, while New Jersey's average was a tick lower at $3.93 per gallon. At this same time in 2025, gas was nearly $1 a gallon cheaper. New York's average price was $3.11 per gallon, while Connecticut was seven cents cheaper. The less expensive gas was in New Jersey, where the average was at $2.97. Sinclair said that even though America is the number one producer of crude oil, the prices per barrel are determined globally, and the war in Iran and the closure of the strait of Hormuz is affecting prices at home. The White House issued a statement saying,"When Operation Epic Fury is complete, gas prices will plummet back to the multi-year lows American drivers enjoyed before these short-term disruptions."launched a joint war against Iran on Feb. 28, the cost of crude oil — the main ingredient in gasoline — has spiked and swung rapidly. That’s because the conflict has caused deep supply chain disruptions and cuts from major oil producers across the More expensive fuel can also push up other spending, from utility bills to the price of many goods consumers buy each day.
