The City of Austin will be activating their cold weather shelters for five consecutive nights beginning Wednesday as another round of cold weather reaches centr

The City of Austin will be activating their cold weather shelters for five consecutive nights beginning Wednesday as another round of cold weather reaches central Texas. With the forecast dipping into the 20s and 30s later this week, the City says that their Homeless Strategies and Operations office will activate overnight Cold Weather Shelters Wednesday evening through Sunday evening.

Those who need a safe, warm place to stay are welcome to use the shelters. The City also says that families with children and unaccompanied minors seeking shelter will be provided hotel lodging. Registration for shelter will occur from 6 to 8 p.m. through Sunday at One Texas Center at 505 Barton Springs Rd, which will act as the central embarkation point for people seeking shelter. CapMetro routes 1, 7, 10, 20, 30, 105 and 801 can take shelter seekers to the OTC, the City offering free fare to those unable to pay.Guests can bring their belongings as long as they can transport them to the OTC and on a CapMetro bus. Pets are allowed in the shelters so long as they are not aggressive, on a leash, can be around others, and can sleep with their owners.Multiple school districts across Central Texas were closed or delayed Tuesday due to hazardous road conditions caused by the weekend's winter storm.
