AKRON, Ohio — Akron police and the Ohio Casino Control Commission raided two businesses this week after complaints of illegal gambling operations. Exclusive body camera video obtained by 19 Investigates shows officers entering a business on East Tallmadge Avenue just before 2 p.m. on May 5 to join a search warrant being executed.
The video shows a man on the floor in handcuffs and slot machines lining the walls. Officers and agents walked around with flashlights and tools, searching the room.visited the East Tallmadge Avenue site twice in April, according to Akron police. The undercover agents played the slot machines, putting in money and receiving cash prizes each time. When agents returned with a search warrant, a man shut the door on them and they forced their way inside, police said.
The East Tallmadge Avenue location was one of two businesses raided in Akron. The other was on East York Street. Agents disabled or seized 27 suspected illegal slot machines and nearly $7,000 in cash. The Ohio Casino Control Commission says illegal casinos harm communities.
The state loses tax revenue that legal casinos are required to pay; that goes to cities, counties and schools. In the first three months of this year, Ohio schools received more than $29 million from legal casino taxes that go to cities, the state and schools, according to the commission’s reports. The regulatory agency says it has served search warrants on more than 181 locations across Ohio and seized or disabled nearly 8,000 illegal slot machines.
That adds up to more than all of the legal slot machines at four commercial casinos in Ohio combined.
