According to the health department, the suspected overdose deaths happened between May 13 and May 14. Officials said the number is concerning because five overdose fatalities within a single day typically prompts a community alert. Franklin County Public Health said the suspected deaths were reported across multiple areas of the county, including central and southwest Franklin County.
Health officials said suspected drug data remains limited because many illegal drugs contain complex powder mixtures or counterfeit pills, making contamination more likely and increasing uncertainty about what people are purchasing on the street. Franklin County Public Health said it has not received reports indicating the drug is currently widespread in the local drug supply. Franklin County Public Health is encouraging residents to carry naloxone, commonly known as Narcan, and to avoid using drugs alone. Narcan is available through risk reduction vending machines located throughout Franklin County, including at:Clinton Township Fire Department, 3820 Cleveland Avenue in ColumbusResidents can also request naloxone by mail through Franklin County Public Health’s website.
The health department said community members should know the signs of an overdose, including chest and stomach pain, changes in heart rate, rapid breathing, increased body temperature, nausea, vomiting, twitching and convulsions. The agency also encourages people to use fentanyl test strips when available and seek treatment or recovery support services if needed.
