Lauren looks scared while sitting in the water closet in Trust (2025)
Sophie Turner’s thriller Trust features multiple storylines that twist together towards a climactic ending. The movie centers on a child actor-turned-star named Lauren Lane who gets caught up in a scandal when her nudes and a photo of a pregnancy get hacked and released.
She decides to get away, booking an Airbnb in a remote area. However, things go sideways when her baby daddy tries to force her to get an abortion and sends a hitman after her when she refuses. Additionally, the uncle and friend of the Airbnb manager decide to rob the place after realizing Lauren is staying there. She hides away in a water closet, where she gets trapped. A water pipe eventually breaks, starting to fill the room. Lauren spends the rest of the movie trying to escape before she dies of hunger, thirst, drowning, or electrocution. This leads to the global streaming sensation’s ending that reveals how Lauren survives and what happens to the robbers, the hitman, and the father of her baby. How Lauren Survives in Trust Although Trust tries to push a message of women’s empowerment, it forces Lauren into the damsel-in-distress role for most of the movie. First, she’s a victim of her older co-star. Then, she’s a victim of the online leaks. Then, she’s the victim of the robbers. Then, she’s a victim of a hitman. Lauren spends half the movie trapped in a water closet with the tools necessary to get out. She could have escaped in a few different obvious ways. However, she doesn’t seem to take logical steps to save herself until the last moment. Her survival ultimately relies on the decisions of strangers, the loyalty of her dog, and sheer dumb luck. Darren has enough self-preservation to refrain from killing Lauren. Merg shoots at the door multiple times, and it’s only through luck that she isn’t hit. Her dog brings Loretta to the Airbnb, and it’s Loretta who helps Lauren fight against the hitman. I’m not convinced Lauren would have been able to handle him by herself. Lauren only plays an active role in two parts of her survival. She gets the hinges off the water closet door, though it takes her two days to think to try that. Additionally, she kills the hitman who was sent by Peter. The Identity Of Lauren’s Baby’s Father, Explained The driving force of Trust is the leak of Lauren’s secret pregnancy. Other than just wanting privacy like anyone else, there is another big reason why she isn’t telling anyone about the pregnancy. Her much more powerful and older co-star, Peter, is the father. The pregnancy occurred as a result of either statutory rape or adult sexual assault with coerced consent. Either situation is bad. However, the movie never provides the context necessary to determine which one it is. What we do know is that he isolated her from her other co-stars on set, gave her special attention, and groomed her into a sexual relationship with him. So, when she finds out she’s pregnant, she doesn’t even tell her team. It could be read as her wanting to protect him, despite her anger about his actions. However, the more likely explanation is that she didn’t want the scrutiny that victims get when they reveal that a powerful, older man took advantage of them. How The Robbers End Up Dead In The Airbnb Every character in Trust, except for Loretta, makes moronic decisions, and the most obvious example of this is the robbers, Merg and Darren. They could have broken in, stolen things, and left without any incident. However, Merg prolonged their stay by trying to enter the water closet to mess with Lauren. They stayed long enough for Darren’s nephew, Marcus, to see the break-in through the cameras and confront them. When Marcus tried to take the gun away, Merg shot him. To cover it up, Merg killed Darren. The robbers left and then came back. The second time around, Merg started haphazardly at the door. One of the bullets injured Darren, and another bounced off the metal and killed Merg. For some completely unknown reason, Darren returns to the Airbnb after going to the hospital. He runs into the hitman, Kroft, who shoots him in the head. Ultimately, both Merg and Darren ended up dead because of their own inane actions in Trust, and Marcus was just a victim of circumstance. Does Peter Face Any Real Consequences? Peter is terrified of getting #MeToo-ed because he coerced Lauren into a sex with him, raising the question of whether he faces any consequences. One of the end scenes shows the police arresting him on the set of his TV show. However, it’s not clear whether he’s getting arrested for hiring a hitman, statutory rape, or sexual assault. There’s also the unfortunate reality that an arrest doesn’t mean a conviction, and it certainly doesn’t mean he's losing his place in Hollywood. Based on the way the two end scenes are cut together, it seems he is still working on the show around nine months after Lauren confirms her pregnancy and presumably outs him as a predator. This just shows how willing Hollywood is to ignore predatory men. Ultimately, in a fantastical world, he faced consequences, including jail time and losing his social status. In a more realistic interpretation of the ending, he faced no real consequences. He still has pull on the show and probably won’t even get jail time. It’s up to the viewer which way they want to look at it. The Role Social Media Plays In Trust Trust doesn’t seem to know what it wants to say about social media. At the beginning, it’s, in many ways, the villain of the story. Fans online are the ones invading Lauren’s privacy and speculating about her pregnancy. However, later, social media is the hero. If the vet hadn’t been flooded with phone calls and messages, she wouldn’t have had to come pick up the dog, which means Georgie wouldn’t have led her to the house. She wouldn’t have been able to help save Lauren from the hitman. By the end, Lauren has embraced social media again, sharing a photo and confirming she’s pregnant. Ultimately, the biggest takeaway from Trust is that social media isn’t inherently positive or negative. It’s simply a tool that can be used for good or bad things. The True Meaning Of Trust’s Ending Trust only engages shallowly with its themes, which is a bit frustrating. However, it’s obvious that they’re trying to offer a message of empowerment to victims at the end. Sophie sharing the photo allows her to reclaim the power that was stripped from her by the hackers, tabloids, and fans. What’s more, she embraces her role as a public figure, choosing that life for herself rather than seeing it as something forced upon her by her mother. If anything, audiences can walk away from Trust with the understanding that, celebrity or not, we all should be able to tell our own stories and define our own lives. 4.0/10 3/10 Trust 10 stars 9 stars 8 stars 7 stars 6 stars 5 stars 4 stars 3 stars 2 stars 1 star Like Follow Followed R Thriller Release Date August 22, 2025 Runtime 86 minutes Director Carlson Young Writers Gigi Levangie Producers Oren Koules, Ketura Kestin, Ulrich Maier Cast See All
