Google Maps for Android and iOS has received a subtle yet noticeable update, sporting a new black and white logo in the bottom left corner of the map. This change, while visually distinct, is unlikely to impact navigation functionality directly.
Google has a team in Mountain View comprised of a few Googlers who spend their days using various Google apps and suggesting improvements. Some of these suggestions are helpful, streamlining the user experience and saving time, while others seem to be implemented simply to justify the team's existence within the company. The latest Google app to receive an update is Google Maps , a platform that has undergone numerous iterations and enhancements over the years.
Both the Android and iOS versions of Google Maps are sporting a redesigned logo in the bottom left corner of the map. Previously, the four-color (blue, red, yellow, and green) Google logo resided in this space. The new iteration, found in version 25.21 of Google Maps for Android and version 25.22 for iOS, simply displays 'Google Maps' in black and white. Will this change lead to faster navigation or superior directions? Unlikely. There's probably a branding-related reason behind Google's decision, and we may not fully understand the rationale until a later date. Notably, the update hasn't yet rolled out to the maps.google.com mobile web version of Google Maps. Even with the change, the four-color logo remains visible in the search bar at the top of the app. The Google Maps icon is situated on the left, followed by the Google Lens icon in the traditional four Google colors on the right side of the search field. This visually creates a split between the old and new versions of Google Maps, with the classic logo on the left and the updated logo on the right. While Google Maps is typically pre-installed on Android devices, iPhone users must download the app from the App Store. Despite the availability of Apple Maps on iPhones, Android users are primarily reliant on the Google Maps app for navigation.
