Google has released the first Android 16 Beta for eligible Pixel devices. Users can enroll in the beta program to receive this build and future updates. Android 16 introduces several notable features, including adaptive apps designed to work seamlessly across various screen sizes and form factors. The platform aims to phase out app restrictions on screen orientation and resizability on larger displays, ensuring a consistent user experience.
Another key addition is Live Updates, a new notification type that enables users to monitor and quickly access crucial ongoing activities. Additionally, Android 16 supports the Advanced Professional Video (APV) codec, optimized for high-quality video recording and post-production at a professional level. This codec supports HDR10/10+, multi-view video, auxiliary video, multiple decoding and re-encoding without significant quality degradation, various chroma sampling formats and bit-depths, and more.Beyond these core features, the Android 16 Beta build includes other noteworthy enhancements such as camera night mode scene detection, vertical text support, predictive back support for 3-button navigation, new accessibility APIs, and more. Users enrolled in the Android Beta Program will receive an over-the-air update to Beta 1. Similarly, those currently on Android 16 Developer Preview 2 will also be eligible for the update. It's important to note that users on Android 25Q1 Beta who wish to opt for the stable release of 25Q1 and exit Beta must decline the OTA update to 25Q2 Beta 1 and await the release of 25Q1.
