STRONGSVILLE, Ohio - A new Netflix documentary is putting the Mackenzie Shirilla case back in the spotlight, and the sister of one of the teens killed is reliving the tragic wreck prosecutors said was no accident.
The crash happened July 31, 2022, in Strongsville. Police said Shirilla was driving up to 100 miles per hour before slamming into a brick wall. Dominic Russo and Davion Flanagan were killed. Shirilla survived.
Christine Russo, Dominic’s sister, said the loss has devastated her family. She said Dominic was the youngest of seven. She described Dominic as outgoing, funny, caring and ambitious. Russo said she knew everything had changed the moment she got the call.
“I have a house up on Middle Bass Island and my dad called me a few times. You don’t get reception, so it was all muffled and I just heard Dom was gone and it has not been the same since and it’s been one long nightmare,” she said. Shirilla was later found guilty of the murders and is serving time at an Ohio women’s prison in Marysville.
Christine Russo said she believes Shirilla belongs in prison “for the remainder of her entire existence,” calling her “a threat to society. ”Russo appears in the Netflix film and says she previewed it before its release. She said she was stunned by what she calls falsehoods.
“I was shocked at the lies that were in the documentary,” she said. “The friends that are in the documentary, they’re not Dominic’s friends. They are Kenzie’s friends. ”The Big Sister: Unhinged“I think she has been so focused on becoming famous since the second she was arrested, even before that.
She killed two people, she was in the hospital bed filming TikToks, and trying to get modeling gigs,” said Russo. Russo also said she doesn’t plan to watch the documentary again, describing the emotional toll it took on her.
“It’s when I did watch it and preview it, I cried. I went right to the cemetery, and I sat at the cemetery in the dark for hours. I cried for weeks. It messed me up so badly and I don’t want to do that to myself again, Russo explained.
Russo said her focus now is keeping Dominic’s memory alive and she’s asking people who watch the documentary to think about the victims first. In 2023, a Cuyahoga County judge found Shirilla guilty of multiple charges, including murder and aggravated vehicular homicide.
