The Hawks made a layup at the buzzer to beat Round Rock Stony Point in the Class 6A Division II Region IV final of the high school basketball playoffs.
SAN MARCOS — Two hours before tip-off, Harlan practiced transition drills, unaware that the simple fundamentals could be the deciding factor in Friday’s Class 6A Division II Region IV final. When Stony Point 's potential game-winning shot bounced off the rim and landed in Hawks senior forward Kameron Williams ’ hands with three seconds on the clock, Harlan coach Jarvin Hall yelled out three words.
“Kick it up,” he said. On the other end of the floor was sophomore guard Jordan Mangum under the basket. The ball left Mangum’s hands before the buzzer sounded and went through the rim to complete Harlan's 16-point second-half comeback against Stony Point, winning 75-73 at San Marcos High School. “We worked on that every day,” said Hall of the play. “It so happened to be the way we won. It couldn’t be a better ending.” Harlan advances to its first state semifinal appearance and faces either Katy Jordan next week in the state semifinals. Stony Point , the reigning Class 6A state runner-ups, led by 16 points early in the third quarter, looking as if its experience and the hostile environment were too much for the Hawks. Harlan chipped away at the lead, going on a 10-3 run to enter the fourth quarter to give itself life. The Hawks took their first lead since early in the second quarter after sophomore Josiah Jones found Williams open for a corner 3 to go up 71-69 with 3:23 remaining. Mangum, who scored 16 points off the bench, kept Harlan in front after pump faking a 3-pointer and cashing in a midrange jumper to lead 73-71. The Tigers made two free throws on the other end to knot the score at 73 and set up the dramatic finish. Williams missed a 3 with under 40 seconds to play, and Stony Point grabbed the defensive rebound. Wasting nearly the entire clock to attempt the final shot, the Tigers missed near the basket before Williams came down with the board. Williams passed the ball up to a wide-open Mangum for the buzzer-beater, who started thinking about the long grind of the season. “Everything we went through, from being up at 6 a.m., from fighting at practice, going hard, it all comes down to this,” Mangum said. “That’s all I was thinking. Of doing it for my team, not me.” Jones led the Hawks with 19 points while senior guard Knowledge Carter followed with 15 points and Williams chipped in with 13 points. Despite the daunting halftime deficit, Harlan never felt like it was out of the game. “No one was giving up,” Mangum said. “We went in the locker room hyped like we were up. You wouldn’t even tell we were down.”
