It was an emotional evening, with parents, teachers, students, and even concerned neighbors asking Austin ISD toThe school is facing a difficult crossroads to avoid a state takeover due to poor performance .

“I've made so many friends. I've made so many bonds with teachers," Brown said. “The teachers aren't only educational forefronts. For me, they're friends, and for some, even family." He spoke at a community conversation Monday, where Austin I.S.D. outlined the difficult options available to the school to avoid a state takeover. “Closing this school, not only for me, but my peers as well, would discard everything that we've worked so hard to achieve," Brown said. Superintendent Matias Segura says the school is predicted to receive its fourth F from the Texas Education Agency, and five would force state action.Dobie alumni and Trustee Candance Hunter says the district must now come up with a turnaround plan. This means turning the school into a charter school, closing for a couple of years to restructure, or closing permanently. "I wish there were a fourth option. There's not. This is sort of the place the state has brought us," Hunter said. “My main concern is the transition of our students away from their homes and into communities that they are not familiar with and that aren't familiar with them." Parent Dameka King doesn’t just have children in Dobie. Like Hunter, she’s also an alumni of the school. “It's helped them come out of their shell, especially my son that goes here in the seventh grade, this is the most friends that he has gotten," King said. "It's just unacceptable. You can't help but to be saddened and then angry at the same time.""Take accountability and say, you know what? This is on us and just move forward," King said. "Closing the school, possibly for a year or two, to me, is not going to get the same results."“If Dobie were to remain open in the 25-26 school year and did not receive an acceptable accountability rating, every school would be taken over, not just Dobie. It is a high risk," Hunter said. "That doesn't mean that we don't have faith in the people in the school. Doesn't mean we don't have faith in the parents and the students. What it does mean is that we have to weigh all 70,000 students and all 117 campuses, and that's where we are."“Keep it open. Invest in these kids," King said. "Don't just give up on them, because you have a parent like myself that is not going to give up on them."“If it is up to the board or a selective group of people, it should be up to the community, the people who were the foundation of Dobbie since the beginning," Brown said.Stay Connected
