Katy Jordan rolls past Harlan in boys basketball Class 6A Divsioon II state semifinal at Texas State.
SAN MARCOS – Putting the larger picture in perspective in difficult when you fall short in the biggest game of your high school career. That's why as Harlan senior Kameron Williams spoke to a reporter Tuesday a tear streamed from his eye.
The Hawks’ 57-36 defeat against Katy Jordan in a Class 6A Division II state semifinal at Texas State’s Strahan Arena certainly wasn’t in his plans. But, it was the reality. “I’m just proud of these guys,” Williams said of his teammates. “We’ve gone through so much this season. I’m proud of what all these guys did. I wouldn’t want to do it with anyone else. Of course, we wanted to get a little bit farther, but it is what it is.” Harlan ends its historic run with its first trip to the state semifinals. The Hawks were led by sophomore Josiah Jones’ 11 points. Senior Knowledge Carter had 10. “We fought through a lot of adversity,” Carter said. “We were able to persevere through injuries, through hard practices. These are my brothers. We did everything together. We didn’t end up how we wanted it to be, but we made it far.” Jordan was led by feisty 5-foot-9 senior point guard Jaden Holt, who had 20 points, including 15 in the first half. Jude Oluokun followed with 11 points. “Some of our main guys just couldn’t get it going today,” Harlan coach Jarvin Hall said. “It’s a big game. I have to credit their defense for that, too. They’re an experienced team. They’re all seniors. I had three sophomores on the court most of the time. We are going to learn our lesson from this one. We’re going to get through it, and we’re going to try out best to get back.” Jordan plays Denton Guyer for the state championship at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Alamodome. Guyer defeated The Woodlands College Park 68-44 on Tuesday in the other semifinal. Jordan never trailed and the Warriors built a 13-7 lead after Holt scored nine points in a three-minute span in the first quarter. The Warriors led 15-11 after the first before going on a 10-2 run to open the second quarter. Harlan crept to within 27-21 following a base line jumper from Amoni Francis with 1:56 on the clock. Jordan made it 32-21 at halftime following a 3-pointer by Jonah Folse and a layup from Oluokun. The Warriors increased their lead to 39-26 by the end of the third as both teams struggling shooting in the period. Jordan pushed its lead to 50-30 with 3:04 in the fourth as the Warriors took advantage of the Hawks’ high-risk pressure defense. The final score was the game’s largest margin. It was the third meeting between the Hawks and Warriors. The met twice in November with Jordan winning their first meeting 61-32 in the Houston Tip Off before the Hawks avenged that loss with a 58-56 victory at the Southwest ISD Tournament. Including their first meeting, Jordan held Harlan to its two lowest scoring outputs of the season. “These guys fought until the last buzzer and that’s all you can ask for for the coaches,” Hall said. “Our guys gave everything they had tonight. We just weren’t the better team.”
