Summer officially kicks off in 34 days, but Tuesday's hot temperatures are giving us a preview of what's ahead. City officials are already looking toward beach season.
They gathered at the world-famous Coney Island Beach to talk about water safety ahead of the official start this weekend. And in the days leading up to Memorial Day, the Parks Department is rolling out a full lineup of events across four boroughs to get New Yorkers excited. The summer kickoff events continue Wednesday in Orchard Beach, Bronx for a special reopening celebration of the historic Orchard Beach Pavilion following an $114 million renovation.
The project restored the building's original architecture, improved accessibility and upgraded concession areas. Much of the pavilion will be open to the public, though some concession spaces are still being finished and are expected to open in July. On Thursday, the focus moves to South Beach on Staten Island and wraps up Friday at Rockaway Beach in Queens.
While free public beaches don't officially open for swimming until Saturday, the city hosts these annual events to build excitement for the summer season and remind everyone about staying safe in the water.
