ANCHORAGE , Alaska - The Alaska Center continued its yearly tradition of bringing awareness to Alaska n sea life on the tenth edition of Wild Salmon Day in Alaska . Former Governor Bill Walker made the holiday official in 2016, and the Alaska Center has used each August 10th thereafter as an opportunity to bring the community together and spread its message of conservation.
“We know that Alaskans really value and want to protect our fish,” said Alaska Center Advocacy Director Kyla Kosednar.Off-and-on rain didn’t deter passers-by from perusing the various tents and attractions even before the scheduled start time of 6 p.m. Live music and a seafood-themed food truck entertained guests, while various organizations used the event as a chance to bring awareness to their own causes. “Salmon are a beautiful representation of how everything in nature is very connected,” said Chennery Fife, the South-Central Alaska Engagement Manager at Trout Unlimited, one of those interest groups that specifically focuses on freshwater habitat conservation. “Those protections for freshwater fish habitats are vital for salmon, which are important for subsistence, for our culture, and for our way of life in Alaska.”Video shows Juneau police officer throwing man to ground during arrest, officer put on administrative leaveAirport worker monitored women with GPS trackers, faces stalking chargesBack to school: Alaska coaches weigh in on balancing school and sports
