Clete Willems, a former Trump trade official, joked that the current administration is launching the rocket ships as they are building it which it comes to the issue. “The President just sees tariffs as a tool for American power.” But Cantwell, and others, cautioned that the ripple effects of a prolonged trade battle could have long ranging impacts. She specifically cited the tariff war with India during President’s Trump’s first term and how that impacted the lentil and apple industries.Whether that's aerospace or agriculture or software. Practically everything we do in the northwest, more than 50% of its sales are overseas,” she noted during the summit. When asked whether there is anything she can do in the minority party in Washington, the former Senate Commerce Committee chair said, “We do have a role here. There have been Presidents who have gone too far in the past, and Congress has reigned them in. Congressman Adam Smith of Bellevue says the government should be focused on “coexisting” with China instead of trying to defeat them, noting all the connections in Washington State. “It is affecting us right now because businesses have to make decisions based on what they think is going to be happening, not just today, but next month and six months from now,” he added.
