Anchor Deborah Knapp and reporter Sue Calberg will stick around at the San Antonio station. KSAT 12 recently announced several of its veterans would retire.

Veteran KENS 5 anchor Deborah Knapp and reporter Sue Calberg have extended their contracts and will stay at the station, the CBS affiliate announced Tuesday. Knapp anchors the 5 p.m. newscast and has been at the station for 37 years.

A San Antonio native, she grew up on the Northeast Side and has been inducted into the San Antonio Women's Hall of Fame. 'I’m thrilled to continue serving the people of San Antonio. This is the city I grew up in and the station I’ve worked at most of my adult life,' she said in a release. 'I am so fortunate to work with a wonderfully talented team I love and respect. Management at KENS 5 let me know I’m welcome to stay as long as I’d like and in today’s world, that’s a blessing.' Calberg will continue a 22-year career at KENS 5, where she is a reporter for the weekday newscasts. She grew up on the East Side and has been a local reporter for 44 years. 'There are so many stories left to tell and I’m excited to extend my long career with the station I love,' she said. 'KENS 5 puts their money where their mouth is. We really are San Antonio’s Own.' The KENS 5 contract extensions come just a week after San Antonio news station KSAT 12 announced six of its long tenured anchors and reporters will retire in late June and early July. KSAT's parent company, Graham Media Group, has offered buyouts to longtime employees at its TV stations. A spokesperson at KSAT said that the journalists, who had a combined 180 years in local reporting, made a collective decision to leave. In the Tuesday announcement, KENS 5 called Knapp and Calberg 'strong leaders.' 'It’s important to us to have a newsroom filled with local expertise. Deborah and Sue know San Antonio like no one else, having spent most of their lives here. They have a strong passion for our community and fight to bring important local stories to our viewers each and every day,' said KENS 5 news director Jack Acosta.
