Several ATVS and dirt bikes riding up East Main Street near Clinton Avenue in Rochester Sunday, Sept. 29, 2024. Irondequoit , N.Y. — It’s almost a guarantee in recent years in Rochester — with nice weather comes the revving, screeching, and roaring of ATVs and dirt bikes on city streets, where they're illegal to drive.
Over the weekend near Parcel 5, traffic was at a standstill as seemingly hundreds of riders descended on the area. “We thought that it would slow down a bit, because it’s starting to get cooler,” said Rochester Mayor Malik Evans Monday, promising another dirt bike detail on city streets in addition to what they already have. But it’s tricky in a densely populated area.“We will chase them,” said Irondequoit Police Chief Scott Peters. He said they have Razor vehicles specially equipped to pursue violators on town roadways. He said enough is enough: young people in particular are getting hurt.Back in the city at Parcel 5, not everyone shares those concerns. “If they’re doing anything negative, then you can stop it," said resident Rohan Phillps. "But they’re not doing anything negative, so I kind of like it, you know what I mean?” “At the end of the day," we’re all grown. We know how to take safety precautions,” said Diamond, another resident. “It’s not really an issue. I’ve seen them riding before, I’ll just get out of the way,” said fellow resident Deja, adding that it’s better for them to be a part of a band of riders than out committing other crimes.“A lot of the times, they’re doing wheelies, so I’m afraid they might fall off and someone could potentially get hurt,” he said.Masha is also concerned about people getting injured, and the sheer level of noise. She lives in an apartment right near where the gangs were congregating over the weekend. “It’s very annoying," she said. "Especially when you’re trying to sleep. They do it past 11 p.m., 3 a.m." Peters blames this uptick in people riding illegal vehicles across the area to a lack of serious legal consequences. “And you keep arresting the same people over and over and over again, the officers are like, ‘what the point?’” he said.“We'll auction it off,” he said.So far this year, Evans claims police have taken in over 137 illegal vehicles. Bottom line: “People should not be driving illegal dirt bikes and ATVs,” said Evans.
