The U.S. has called on Sudan’s military to join talks aimed at calming the country’s grinding conflict as the country faces a worsening humanitarian crisis. The military has boycotted negotiations in Geneva, Switzerland, now in their third day, despite international pleas that they participate.

Demonstrators hold signs during a rally, on the opening day of peace talks for Sudan , at the Place des Nations in front of the European headquarters of the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2024. U.S. Special Envoy for Sudan Tom Perriello talks to the media about talks aimed on Sudan during a press briefing at the U.S. Mission in Geneva, Switzerland, Monday, Aug. 12, 2024.

Diplomats from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, The United Arab Emirates, the Africa Union and the United Nations were at the talks that started earlier this week, and the paramilitary group sent a delegation to the city.
