When the policy changes were first announced in the summer, mixed reactions from parents flooded social media.
Among the biggest changes are a new cell phone policy and changes for water bottles and backpacks allowed on campuses.Superintendent Becky Birdsong said, “We decided to allow kids to have them at school, but they have to be off all day, they can’t use it at break or at lunch or anything.”
“We know the research is very clear,” said Mackey. “When you take cell phones out of the school, discipline problems go down, grades go up.”“We’ve had issues of picture taking of inappropriate things and people not wanting their pictures made, to cheating with cell phones,” said Birdsong. “You know there’s the social media aspect.”Another change this school year is only clear water bottles with screw-on tops are allowed.
“It had gotten to the point where the backpacks were just everywhere,” she said. “It was a way for kids to bring in vapes. Vapes have become a big problem.”
