Robotnik and Sonic in Sonic the Hedgehog 3

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 has just recently entered production, and it appears that the film's iconic new villain may have already been cast. The film is among the most hotly anticipated upcoming video game adaptations, and looks to explore new and familiar characters in an exciting new setting.

The world of Sonic on the big screen is growing bigger with each film, and that's a wonderful thing. Following last year's release of a Knuckles spinoff on Paramount+, it is clearly important to the studio that the franchise add more familiar characters that can stand alone. This makes one recent update even more exciting. Ben Kingsley’s History Could Make Him The Perfect Sonic Villain Ben Kingsley was recently cast as a new voice in Sonic 4, and he would make an ideal villain for the franchise. Following three stories centered around Jim Carrey's Dr. Robotnik, the series needs a new threat. Kingsley's incredible history in Hollywood sets the actor up perfectly to take on a villainous role. Sir Ben Kingsley has been nominated for four Academy Awards, winning the title of Best Actor for his performance in 1982's Gandhi. He has had a long career on screen and stage over many decades, and for good reason. The actor has an incredible range, playing emotional heroes and terrifying villains alike. Memorably, Kingsley has played a supporting role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since 2013's Iron Man 3. The marketing for that film set the actor's role as the iconic Marvel villain, the Mandarin. Beginning as a terrifying antagonist to Tony Stark, the character was later revealed to be a much more charismatic and goofy actor. The first part of that performance is the most important here, but it cannot be disputed that many Sonic characters who begin by opposing the hero often come around to his side, including Knuckles. If that is the case, seeing performances from Kingsley as Trevor Slattery in the recently renewed Wonder Man, only further attests to the actor's versatility. What is more important here, however, is the terror Kingsley can conjure, both as the Mandarin and in other roles. In Sexy Beast, he was so effective at playing the role of an intimidating criminal that he was nominated for another Academy Award. With Kingsley set to join the cast of Sonic 4 he already looks to be the ideal choice for one particular villain. Kingsley Would Be The Ideal Choice To Voice Metal Sonic Metal Sonic looks to be a major antagonist in Sonic 4, and Ben Kingsley would be the perfect choice to voice him. Sonic villains have had to find a balance between fear-inspiring and goofy, and the dichotomy presented in Kingsley's performance as Trevor Slattery could be the perfect template for this. Sometimes, Metal Sonic will need to embody the terror of the Mandarin. Other times, the villain will need to feel lighter, like Kingsley's turn as Professor Ibrahim Arif in the cast of The Thursday Murder Club. While Kingsley has not yet been confirmed to be voicing this character, it is difficult to imagine a better choice for the new foe. Metal Sonic was introduced in the post-credits scene from Sonic 3, and is likely to be the next film's major antagonist. With the character first appearing in the 1993 video game Sonic CD, there is reason to expect that the new film will draw influence from that game's time-travelling format. Fixing a world overrun by robots has been a major theme in various Sonic media through the years. The 1993 animated series Sonic the Hedgehog saw Sonic and the Freedom Fighters leading a resistance against Robotnik's dystopic technological regime. Other shows like Netflix's Sonic Prime have told similar stories. The Sonic films have been mostly grounded in the real world, although each installment has veered closer to the colorful tones and ideas prevalent in the larger franchise. Especially with Metal Sonic as the new villain, it is likely that the next film will move even further into the franchise's science fiction backdrops. Granted, Kingsley could be playing another role than Metal Sonic. The actor's versatility could equip him for all kinds of roles in the series, whether good or evil, malicious or benevolent. He would also be an excellent Fang the Sniper or Silver the Hedgehog. However, it is hard to imagine a better choice for Metal Sonic than Kingsley. Sonic 4’s Excellent Cast Might Be The Franchise’s Best Yet The Sonic franchise has an incredible cast of countless characters, and the recently added Sonic 4 cast - which includes a wide range of well-known actors like Nick Offerman, Matt Berry, and Richard Ayoade - suggests that Sonic's cinematic world is going to grow even bigger. Offerman is set to play a voice role, which has enormous potential. Evidenced by The LEGO Movie and Gravity Falls, Offerman is a strong voice actor. He has an excellent paternalistic tone and could play a role related specifically to the new Sonic canon. In the movies, Sonic was raised by Longclaw the Owl, and it is possible that Offerman's role could be for a new character relevant to that movie-specific background. With that said, many characters in the world of Sonic have inhabited different universes. The IDW comic books have one set of characters, while both classic and modern video games have their own sets. Archie Comics had its own world of Sonic characters spun off from the related animated series, while Sonic Boom introduced yet another take on the franchise's world. Guessing at which characters could be added to the new film is difficult because there are so many possibilities. Rouge the Bat is likely the most popular character in the Sonic series that is not yet present in the films, alongside Blaze the Cat, Cream the Rabbit, and Cheese the Chao, and it'd be no surprise if the franchise's new actors were provided with suitably major roles for them to demonstrate their talents in. More likely, if Paramount is looking to expand the Sonic universe, it will be with a character like Big the Cat, for whom Offerman would be a great voice. This would be a departure from the more bumbling performance in previous iterations, but the casting of Idris Elba as a slightly different take on Knuckles shows that the series is willing to make stylistic changes. Certainly, the films could alternatively bring in a group like the Chaotix, and Offerman would be a great choice for someone like Vector as well. Either way, this exciting cast will certainly expand the world of Sonic the Hedgehog 4 in exciting ways. Whomever these actors portray, the future looks bright for the Sonic franchise.
