Metal Sonic with an army of Metal Sonics behind him in Sonic the Hedgehog 3
A convincing theory about Sonic the Hedgehog 4 indicates a secret villain from the games is actually hiding in plain sight. Sonic the Hedgehog 3's post-credits scene laid the groundwork for the upcoming installment, confirming Metal Sonic will be the next big threat.
It also introduced Amy Rose, a new ally with an important history with Sonic in the games. However, the story of Sonic the Hedgehog 4 appears to be hiding a deeper secret that's yet to be revealed. While not much is known about the plot, its latest title reveal trailer confirmed the Chaos Emeralds are going to be heavily involved. This emphasis on their presence may also be hinting at another villain's debut in the movies. Sonic 4’s First Trailer Hints Chaos Will Be Its True Villain Sonic the Hedgehog 4's title trailer featured plenty of references to the concept of chaos. Dr. Robotnik's voiceover, confirming Jim Carrey's return, included the line"the chaos has only just begun." In addition, the description for the trailer on YouTube refers to the movie as a"countdown to chaos." This, in particular, is the biggest hint another villain will be coming soon. These references to chaos appear to be direct hints that the entity Chaos will appear as a villain in Sonic the Hedgehog 4. Debuting in 1998's Sonic Adventure, Chaos is a water monster whose powers are enhanced when he collects the seven Chaos Emeralds. Sonic and friends try to fight him while Dr. Eggman collects the Emeralds to make him stronger. Chaos also has ties to the Echidnas. Although Knuckles offered a different backstory, the video games reveal Chaos was once protector of the Chaos Emeralds, before the Echidnas stole them. Enraged, he attacked them, later becoming sealed inside the Master Emerald. that was until Dr. Eggman freed him and began to make him stronger. The tagline"countdown to chaos" appears to be a direct reference to the Sonic X episode of the same name. The anime series loosely adapted Sonic Adventure's storyline starting with season 1, episode 26,"Countdown to Chaos." This was the episoide just before Chaos' anime debut, making it an important tie-in to his history in the franchise. The direct mention of"chaos," coupled with the Chaos Emeralds making a more pronounced appearance, makes it seem like Chaos could show up in Sonic the Hedgehog 4. He's a big enough villain that, should he appear, it would make for one of the most large-scale confrontations in the movies, bringing everything to a fittingly wild place after Shadow. How Chaos Could Be Sonic 4’s Real Villain The Chaos Emeralds getting a major focus indicates more of their lore is going to be delved into in the movies. If that's the case, then it would be the perfect way to finally get Chaos involved. His arrival would be a surprise given how big Amy and Metal Sonic's roles are going to be. But it would also be a perfect focus for the story of Sonic 4. As of writing, it's unclear why Metal Sonic attacked Sonic, nor why Amy appeared just in time to save him. If the movie pulls from Sonic CD, where both Metal Sonic and Amy first appeared, then it could involve the Time Stones. If that's the case, the pair could be from the future, with the villain trying to stop Sonic in the past for reasons unknown. One possibility is that Chaos is part of Metal Sonic's plan to rule or destroy the world in the future, but Sonic ended up putting a stop to him. As such, he used the Time Stones to travel to the present, trying to kill Sonic before he could ruin his plans. This would give Metal Sonic a motivation while also having Chaos be an important part of the story. If that's the case, then Sonic the Hedgehog 4 may focus on Metal Sonic trying to preserve a future where he rules the world. If Chaos is involved, then using the aquatic monster for his villainous purposes could be the reason for his conflict with Sonic. Since"chaos" seems important, the villain's appearance in the movie seems very plausible.
