) - The City of Selma is set to receive additional state funding aimed at improving two of its key recreational sites; Bloch Park and Memorial Stadium. State Senator Robert Stewart announced during a recent Selma City Council meeting that the city will receive an additional $50,000 in fiscal year 2027, building on a previous $50,000 allocation in fiscal year 2026.
Stewart said the funding is part of a broader push to continue investing in Selma, noting that the city has seen nearly $1 million in total state investment since fiscal year 2023. “There’s going to be an additional $50,000 as well for FY 2027 for Bloch Park slash Memorial Stadium,” Stewart said. “So that’s a total of $100,000 over two years.” During the announcement, Stewart also credited collaboration at the state level, thanking State Representative Fred Chestnut for his role in helping secure funding through the state’s budgeting process. Beyond the headline investment, Stewart made a direct request to city leaders—encouraging them to prioritize improvements that would directly impact families. Specifically, he suggested using part of the funding to repair the playground at Bloch Park, saying it would enhance quality of life for children and residents in the community. “If plans have not already been made to repair the playground at Bloch Park, I would like to request that some of that funding be used to fix up the playground for the children,” he said. Stewart emphasized that investments like these are about more than infrastructure; they’re about creating better, safer, and more functional spaces for the people who live in Selma. City leaders acknowledged the announcement during the meeting, calling the funding another step forward as the city continues ongoing efforts to improve public spaces and community resources. In addition to the park funding, Stewart also announced a separate $50,000 appropriation for the Smitherman Building, further contributing to revitalization efforts across the city. As Selma continues to push forward with improvements, leaders say partnerships at the local and state level will be key to sustaining progress and delivering long-term results for residents.‘Amazing transformation’: Wetumpka police chaplain in remission, celebrated by community
