For decades, Coach Willie Maxey has been a cornerstone of Selma’s community — shaping not only championship teams, but generations of young people.

) -For decades, Coach Willie Maxey has been a cornerstone of Selma ’s community — shaping not only championship teams, but generations of young people. On Saturday, Maxey received one of Selma ’s highest recognitions — the key to the city — just days after being inducted into the Alabama High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame.

Maxey dedicated more than 35 years to Selma City Schools, serving as a teacher, coach and administrator. As head coach of the Selma High Saints from 1989 to 2000, Maxey built a legacy of excellence — compiling more than 150 wins, securing multiple area championships and leading the team to a Class 6A state championship in 1994. He also guided the Saints to a state runner-up finish in 1998, helping solidify Selma’s presence in high school basketball across Alabama.“More than a coach” Selma Mayor Johnny Moss III says Maxey’s influence helped shape not only athletes, but the entire community. “He balanced discipline with encouragement, inspired teamwork and accountability, and left a lasting impression on generations of student-athletes, colleagues, and administrators,” Moss said.William Bowman, who played under Maxey and later worked alongside him, says the coach became much more than a mentor. “He treated me like I was his son… taught me how to respect people… and never let me feel left out,” Bowman said. Bowman, who is legally blind, said Maxey made sure he was included — whether on the team, traveling with players or learning life lessons that still guide him today. He added that the recognition Maxey is receiving now is deserved. “It’s long overdue… what he’s done for young people in this city — he deserves to be in the spotlight,” Bowman said.During the city council meeting earlier this week, Moss shared a personal story — revealing that Maxey played a direct role in his own family’s history. “Coach Maxey actually was the man that put my mom and my dad together… and with that, I wouldn’t be standing here today,” Moss said.“I will continue to present keys to the city to people… and honor them while they’re still living. And this is so well-deserved.”Despite decades of recognition and success, Maxey remained humble as he accepted the honor. “I have never in my life dreamed of anything that happened… it was a wonderful occasion… the Lord blessed me to be one of the 12,” Maxey said, referring to his Hall of Fame induction. With both a Hall of Fame induction and the key to the city, Maxey’s legacy is now formally recognized — not just for wins and championships, but for the lives he helped shape. City leaders and former players alike say his influence will continue to be felt for generations to come. It’s about honoring a man who helped build a community — one student at a time.Copyright 2026 WSFA.
