) - One of more than 3,000 “ No Kings Day ” protests held nationwide took place Saturday at the Alabama State Capitol in Montgomery , drawing more than 1,000 people, according to organizer counts. Demonstrators said they gathered to show a united front against the Trump administration and what they described as an increasingly authoritarian style of leadership.
“The biggest thing is to be a unified force,” said Devon Jones, a volunteer with the ACLU of Alabama. “Fight back against the fear and brute force that this administration has been peddling, and just let everyone know that they’re not alone. Community is really important in a time like this.” Jones said protesters are concerned about government actions they believe prioritize self-interest over public needs. “We shouldn’t have someone who runs the country out of self-interest, which is what we’re seeing,” Jones said. “We’re seeing people getting kicked off of Medicaid and unable to afford insurance.”“The war in Iran. A lot of people think this is a conflict. This is more than a conflict,” said Travis Jackson, who attended the protest. “This is a war. This is a genocidal campaign that has encouraged other countries to attack innocent lives on Iran land.” Organizers said the issues extend beyond international affairs, pointing to immigration and access to basic resources. “The immigrant voice has started to be silenced in different spaces,” said Celsa Allende Stalworth, organizing manager for the ACLU of Alabama. “Whether it be in access to health care, whether it be in access to safe food, safe water, housing. But that’s the thing, it’s not only the immigrant voice, it’s collectively everyone’s voice.” No Kings Day protests were held in cities across the country, with participants calling for expanded civil liberties and accountability in government.‘Amazing transformation’: Wetumpka police chaplain in remission, celebrated by community
