The Boston Red Sox are still searching for a third baseman, with Alex Bregman proving to be an elusive target. While manager Alex Cora desires Bregman, the team's unwillingness to offer a long-term contract may have cost them. Instead, the Red Sox are focusing on Randal Grichuk, a right-handed bat who could provide valuable contributions against left-handed pitching.
Even the most ardent supporters of the Boston Red Sox acquiring Alex Bregman have to acknowledge that the chances are dwindling. Bregman, a two-time All-Star third baseman with a right-handed swing ideally suited for Fenway Park , has been sporadically linked to the Red Sox throughout the winter, and it seems manager Alex Cora genuinely desires him in Boston. However, if the front office shared that sentiment, Bregman likely would have signed by now.
Reports indicate that the Red Sox have been reluctant to offer more than four years to Bregman, who has at least two other proposals of six years from American League contenders. While there's always a possibility Boston could reconsider their stance, it's probably prudent to temper Red Sox fans' expectations. On the other hand, there's a lesser-known player who nearly every analyst believes the Red Sox can secure, to the point where it would be surprising if he signed elsewhere. Former Arizona Diamondbacks designated hitter/outfielder Randal Grichuk was initially projected to join the Red Sox on a $12 million deal, according to Ryan Finkelstein of Just Baseball on January 13th. On Friday, Finkelstein updated his analysis, stating, 'Grichuk thrived in the (platoon) role, crushing lefties to the tune of a .319/.386/.528 slash line, with a 151 wRC+ across 184 plate appearances.' Finkelstein continued, 'Grichuk would be the perfect partner for Masataka Yoshida and the Boston Red Sox. It’s not a move that would generate the same level of excitement as a potential Alex Bregman signing, but it would provide a much-needed right-handed bat.'The Red Sox's struggles against left-handed pitching last season were widely publicized, so Grichuk would be a valuable addition in addressing this weakness. However, for fans who were hoping for Bregman, a second coming of Rob Refsnyder might seem somewhat underwhelming. Nevertheless, it's undeniably better to be disappointed that Grichuk isn't Bregman than to be disappointed that the team signed no one at all. The Red Sox's pursuit of a third baseman continues, with Grichuk appearing to be a more realistic target than the star power of Bregman.
