The Boston Red Sox are interested in Alex Bregman, but the two sides are reportedly locked in a standoff over contract length. Bregman's agent says he's only interested in long-term deals, while the Red Sox may be hesitant to commit to a large contract for a player who will soon be 31.
The Boston Red Sox are reportedly interested in signing Alex Bregman , and it appears the feeling is mutual. However, there seems to be a roadblock in reaching an agreement. Bregman, who is 30 years old, remains a free agent as spring training approaches. During a recent conversation with USA TODAY's Bob Nightengale, Bregman's agent, Scott Boras, stated that his client is not open to signing a short-term contract.
Nightengale wrote, 'While (Pete) Alonso may be willing to accept a short-term deal with the ability to opt out after the 2025 season, Bregman is not going down that path. He has no desire to accept a short-term contract, and remains engaged with several teams like the Toronto Blue Jays, Detroit Tigers and Boston Red Sox.' Boras added, 'Bregman's a championship player, teams know it. It's really a matter of his decision-making and theirs, about how you can close up that gap. There's substantial interest (in long-term) deals.' Nightengale did not specify the Red Sox as a team attempting to sign Bregman to a short-term deal. It's plausible, though, that Boston is hesitant to commit to a large contract for a player who will soon be 31 and is coming off what could be considered his least productive offensive season. This isn't to say that Bregman is past his prime. He hit .260 with 26 home runs and a .768 OPS last season while also winning his first American League Gold Glove Award at third base. Bregman's desire for a long-term contract and the Red Sox's potential reservations about committing to a significant deal for an aging player create a fascinating dynamic in these negotiations. It remains to be seen if the two sides can bridge the gap and reach an agreement that satisfies both parties.

This leaves the Red Sox and Yankees locked in a potential bidding war, with both teams capable of making a significant financial commitment. The Red Sox are also rumored to be a destination for Nolan Arenado, further complicating the situation.
