As Evie sorts through her father's abandoned house, contemplating its sale, she reconnects with a group of hardy cold-water swimmers, including an old acquaintance Freya, which steers her towards confronting her history, yielding revelations that stir the local folk and jolt her family's dynamic. Taking to Twitter, the 64 year old Scottish TV presenter defended herself as she reacted to the article. She expressed her feelings and asserted: "So Deborah - really love your writing but FFS - I wrote every feckin word of my novel #theislandswimmer - hardest thing I've ever done."
