How Does the Transfer Portal Affect NFL Draft Evaluations?
NFLTransfer PortalSenior Bowl

The article explores how NFL scouts and coaches evaluate college football players in the context of the increasingly common transfer portal. It highlights that experience playing in different offenses and with diverse teammates can actually be beneficial for players during the Senior Bowl and in their future NFL careers.

) - Players from across the country are headed to Mobile at the end of the month, in hopes of impressing NFL coaches and scouts in this year’s Reese’s Senior Bowl , but how are these players evaluated? Of course we track their speed, their acceleration rate, and their movements on the field.

They participate in one on ones, and team drills, but with the rapidly changing landscape of college football, I wondered if these coaches and scouts took the transfer portal into account, like whether or not a player transfers to a new school and how many times they transfer. While loyal fans might not love the cons of the transfer portal, for those NFL coaches and scouts, Senior Bowl Executive Director Jim Nagy says it actually doesn’t hurt a player, it helps. “It can help the evaluation because you’re seeing them in different offenses, you’re seeing them in different locker rooms. That helps, you know, you’ve seen this guy run with a lot of different types of people, because in the NFL, that’s what it is like. In college, it’s more regional, like if you’re in an SEC program, most of the kids are from the Southeast part of the country. And in the NFL, they’re coming from everywhere. So, it has really helped the evaluation and figuring out who these guys are on the field because they’re playing in different systems.” It’s no secret that historically quarterbacks struggle a bit during these Senior Bowl practices, adapting to new coaches, new receivers, and there’s a new playbook to learn in a short period of time. but those that have experienced something like this a time or two.. or three, might just have the upper hand. Nagy says Oregon QB and Heisman finalist Dillon Gabriel is a perfect example. “He starts his career at UCF, right? He’s been in the Southeast part of the country and there’s certain players down here. Then, he goes to Oklahoma and that’s a whole different part of the country. Then he goes out to Eugene, Oregon. So he’s been in three different locker rooms. So now in the NFL, guys go to these different programs, and see how he blends with his teammates, which is a big deal for these quarterbacks.” College football is looking more and more like the NFL every day. It will be interesting to see what the landscape looks like in the years to come.Mobile PD: 3 people found dead overnight after being struck by train19-year-old woman escapes naked after ‘friends’ kidnap, attack and rob her, police sayMalik Dia scores 23 points to lead No. 21 Mississippi over No. 4 Alabama 74-64
