Gas Prices Dip Before Easter, Experts Offer Tips for Saving

Gas prices are falling before the Easter weekend, but experts warn that they could rise again soon. Learn how to save money on gas with apps, credit cards, and loyalty programs.

Drivers across the nation are enjoying a respite from high gas prices as the Easter weekend approaches. According to AAA, the national average for a gallon of regular gas stood 46 cents lower on Tuesday compared to prices observed a year ago. However, rising demand, potential tariffs, and the transition to summer-blend fuels could signal a surge in prices in the coming weeks.

The National Association of Convenience Stores (NACS) predicts that gasoline prices typically reach their peak right before Memorial Day. Seeking out lower prices through gas savings apps presents a viable strategy for stretching your budget. Driver Katie Miller shared her reliance on the Waze app, stating, 'When the button for low gas comes on, it gives you options for the cheapest gas near you, and I just click for the cheapest one.' Other noteworthy apps include GasBuddy, which empowers drivers to locate the most affordable fuel in their vicinity; Upside, which helps discover gas deals and offers cash back upon filling up at participating stations; and the AAA Mobile app, which allows users to conveniently check fuel prices.Beyond apps, maximizing savings can be achieved by leveraging credit card rewards. Sarah Rathner, a credit card expert from NerdWallet, recommends opting for a gas credit card that accrues at least 3% cash back on fuel purchases. Rathner explained that 'If you have a long commute or you take a lot of road trips, that means gas is a bigger portion of your budget. You can find a card that earns a high cash back rate on gas.' She noted that gas credit cards often extend rewards to dining and travel expenses as well. Conversely, when gas prices are elevated, Rathner advises that 'cents off' per gallon discounts offered by many gas station-branded cards become less impactful than percentage-based cash back. While credit card rewards can be beneficial, consolidating savings by combining them with loyalty points earned at a local gas station or grocery store can yield even greater results
