North Alabama is bringing some Power Four experience to its coaching staff.
Oklahoma State interim defensive coordinator Clint Bowen sends in the defense after a turnover against Kansas State in the third quarter at Boone Pickens Stadium on November 15, 2025 in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
Lions coach Brent Dearmon announced on Wednesday that the program is hiring Clint Bowen as its next defensive coordinator, along with two other staff moves being made official. North Alabama is also hiring Oklahoma State analyst Colby Ellis to coach wide receivers and former Missouri State offensive line coach Max Halpin to the same position. Michael Johnson will move from running backs coach to linebackers coach and Vincent “Bo” Jackson has been promoted to coach outside linebackers. Bowen and Dearmon worked together on staff at Kansas during the 2019 season, with the current UNA head coach serving as offensive coordinator for the Jayhawks and Bowen coaching safeties after a stint as defensive coordinator. Bowen will replace Brock Caraboa, who announced his departure from the program at the beginning of the month after three seasons at North Alabama. “Clint Bowen is one of the smartest defensive minds I have been around in football,” Dearmon said in a release. “The experience and knowledge he will bring to our staff will be of great benefit. He has been a coordinator in the Big 12 on multiple occasions and has learned how to adapt his defense to best fit his players.” He spent last season at Oklahoma State, where he began the year in a quality control position on the Cowboys’ staff. He was promoted later to serve as interim defensive coordinator following the firing of former Oklahoma State defensive coordinator Todd Grantham. He has also served as a defensive coordinator at the collegiate level for Kansas, Western Kentucky and North Texas across 14 seasons, including a stint as the Jayhawks’ interim head coach in 2014 after the firing of Charlie Weis. “I’m thankful to Coach Dearmon for the opportunity to be a part of UNA football as the defensive coordinator,” Bowen said in a release. “I look forward to building relationships with our players and the UNA community. Work has already started building a defense that gets the UNA fans excited.” The University of Kansas alum has also coached special teams, safeties, linebackers, tight ends and running backs during his 30-year collegiate coaching career. Before being hired at Oklahoma State ahead of the 2025 season, Bowen was the head coach at Lawrence High School in Kansas. His teams went 26-15 during his tenure as the program’s head coach.and spent last season at Oklahoma State as well.
