BULVERDE, Texas - New details are emerging regarding the shooting Monday morning at Hill Country College Preparatory High School, where a teacher was wounded by a 15-year-old student. The student then turned the gun on himself. Comal County Sheriff Mark Reynolds provided updates Tuesday on the weapon used, the student’s potential motives, and a lapse in campus security. The Weapon: The shooter utilized a .357 revolver taken from his residence. The firearm belonged to a family member. “The gun that he did use – that particular gun is a .357 revolver, of course, that's been collected. We know that it came from where he lives - belongs to a family member that lives on location there at the residence,” explained Reynolds.“Anytime there is an unsecured gun that is left where a child or another individual could get it, could face charges,” said Reynolds. It was revealed that a School Resource Officer was not on campus when the shooting occurred. While the Bulverde Police Department has an agreement to provide SROs for the school, none were present at the time. “On that particular campus, the Bulverde Police Department has an agreement to provide the school resource officers to that particular school, but they were not on campus at the time,” explained Reynolds. While a definitive motive is still being determined, investigators are looking into the student’s academic struggles, noting he was failing several classes. Authorities have seized electronic evidence from the boy’s home to determine if the attack was premeditated or targeted. The shooting took place early Monday morning in a second-floor classroom. Most of the student body was in the cafeteria at the time, which likely prevented further casualties. The teacher remains hospitalized. While authorities have not officially released her name, Sheriff Reynolds provided a somber update on her recovery: "Her ability to communicate is - presently it's like squeezing of hands. She knows people are thinking of her. Our thoughts and prayers are with her."The Sheriff’s Office is currently tracking down witnesses who may have seen the shooting occur. The primary focus remains on uncovering how the student managed to transport the firearm to school and establishing a clear timeline of the events leading up to the violence. Bulverde Police have been reached for comment regarding the absence of the SRO but have not yet issued a response. The school was placed on lockdown shortly after 8:30 a.m., and students were later bused to a nearby middle school for reunification with their families. Some parents waited in long lines, some praying, as they were reunited with their children. The shooter’s family members were also present at the reunification site, officials said. The sheriff noted a somber moment during the evacuation process, stating that the gunman’s family was already in line at the reunification center when they were approached by law enforcement. “We’re trying to collect as much information as we can from witnesses,” said Comal County Sheriff Mark Reynolds. Reynolds said investigators are working to understand the relationship between the student and the teacher and how the firearm was obtained. Classes were canceled Tuesday, but counselors are being made available to students and families, Principal Julie Wiley said in a statement. “Our hearts are with everyone impacted, especially that teacher, their family, and our school community,” Wiley said. “We know this has been a difficult day.” The school, part of the Comal Independent School District, focuses on preparing students for college through a STEAM-based curriculum, including courses in cybersecurity and engineering.Hill Country College Preparatory High School recognizes that even after a critical incident is resolved, students and families may experience lingering emotional effects. Children may respond in different ways, including confusion, fear, sadness, irritability, or physical complaints such as headaches or stomachaches. Parents play a crucial role in helping their children process these emotions and feel supported at home. Common reactions children may show after a lockdown or stressful event include increased activity, decreased concentration, anger or irritability, sadness or withdrawal, physical complaints, and repeatedly talking about the event. Recognizing these reactions can help parents respond in supportive ways.Create space to talk: Encourage your child to share how they are feeling. Let them know it’s okay to feel upset, worried, or confused. Some children may prefer to draw, write, or play music as a creative outlet. Listen calmly: Try to listen without interrupting or rushing to “fix” their feelings. Your calm presence is reassuring. Offer reassurance: Remind your child that adults at school and in the community work together every day to keep students safe.Limit exposure to rumors or social media: Too much information or speculation can increase anxiety.School Counselors and student support specialists will be available to speak with students who need supportResourcesHill Country MHDD Centers – Behavioral health, crisis care, and developmental services.
