The big personality in a slight frame who refereed Crimson Tide practices for decades has died. He was 97. Alabama head athletics trainer Jeff Allen, a close friend of Conyers, announced his death in a social media post Tuesday afternoon. We lost a true Alabama legend today.Eddie Conyers was a remarkable man who was a part of this program from Coach Bryant’s first years until this season.I will always cherish the conversations we had at practice for the past 19 seasons.He loved Alabama and he loved our players. Conyers began refereeing Alabama practices in 1962 -- five years into Paul “Bear” Bryant’s legendary tenure as head coach. He spent the next six decades in stripes as a fixture in the program and a personality hard to match. Though he was a behind-the-scenes guy, Conyers gained celebrity status over the years as he spoke to alumni groups across the state.He was often the topic of a well-intentioned ribbing from Nick Saban over his tenure in Tuscaloosa. The coach, who worked mostly with the Alabama defense, joked that he was biased toward the offense.. “He’s been doing this for 53 years. But this guy is a double agent. You have to take the flag out and throw it if it’s against the offense. Now he’ll throw them against the defense. I’ve had to threaten him ever since I’ve been here.” Conyers also had a famous 2009 encounter with Greg McElroy. The quarterback rolled out of the pocket, dodging a sack, and accidentally flattened the icon.. “When I opened my eyes, I saw Coach Saban’s face looking down at me. He asked me if I was dead, and I said, ‘No’. He said, ‘Good. Get up and get back to work’.” Conyers wasn’t quite as active on the practice field in recent years, but he remained committed to the program.in August of Conyers and his wife, Peggy, at the airport for a sendoff of the Crimson Tide as the team flew to Tallahassee for the season opener at Florida State.Sending a prayer up for one of the best to ever do it Eddie Conyers get your rest.
