Two athletes stood out this week at the Last Chance Indoor Meet in Birmingham.

Fairview’s Nic Fallon and Saraland’s Amiah Matone were the overall winners of the pentathlon at the Last Chance Indoor Meet #1 at the Birmingham CrossPlex on Friday. Fallin scored 3,099 points, ahead of Spain Park’s James Thompson and Hewitt-Trussville’s Ben Reeves . Oak Mountain’s Blake Harry and Noah Allday rounded out the top five. Fallin was second in the 60-meter hurdles , first in the high jump , second in the long jump , first in the shot and 19th in the 1,000 Matone won the girls’ pentathlon with 3,253 points, easily beating Fort Payne’s Lydie Varnadore , Lee-Huntsville’s , Pelham’s Emma Grace Howard and Northridge’s Annabelle Bean . Matone won the long jump and the 60-meter hurdles , finished fifth in the high jump , was second in the 800 , and eighth in the shot put . Meanwhile, the boys had remarkable performances in open track and field events. Gulf Shores’ Carter Davis continued to shine in the 60 meters, winning in 6.80, while Huntsville’s Mikele Ellison won a very competitive 400-meter race in 48.75. Oxford’s Matt Tippets won a close 800, edging Homewood’s Charles Stone, 1:59.55 to 1:59.90, while Mountain Brook’s Ethan Schniper outlasted Jacksonville’s Rua Mathis in the 1,600 . Vestavia Hills’ John Hayes continued his string of strong races by winning the 3,200 in 9:17.12. Speaking of Vestavia Hills, it also won the 4 X 800 in 7:59.62, while Smith’s teammates, Brady Ferrell and Josh Hahn finished 1-2 in the pole vault, clearing 14-6 and 14-0 respectively. Meanwhile, Hoover got wins from Damian Reese in the triple jump and Nigel Thomas in the shot . Other individual Alabama athletes and/or teams coming away with wins included Homewood’s Tomon Felton in the long jump , Huntsville in the 4 X 200 , and Hewitt-Trussville in the 4 X 400 . In the girls’ division, Jams Clemens got a meet-record win from Trinity Milligan in the triple jump , while teammate Erihana Johnson won the 60-meter dash . Hoover’s Daisy Luna continued her dominance in the 400, winning in 55.46. The girls’ elite shot put produced a record, as Cara Huff of Indian Springs uncorked a meet-record of 44-4 ½. Mountain Brook got wins from Sydney Martin in the pole vault and Emelia White in the 1,600 . The Spartans also got a meet record in the 4 X 800, winning in 9:22.74. Other notable wins came from Hewitt-Trussville’s Hadley Turner, who won the 3,200 , while Opelika won the 4 X 200-meter relay in 1:42.20 and Enterprise won the 4 X 400 .Blount High’s boys dominated the sprints and had strong performances in the relays at the Last Chance #2 meet at the Birmingham CrossPlex on Saturday. The Leopards got first-place performances from Jordin Gulley in the 60-meter dash and Kantrell Benjamin in the 400 , as well as a first in the 60-meter hurdles from Malik Jackson , Blount also got wins in the 4 X 400 and 4 X 800 and finished a close second in the 4 X 200 , just an eyelash behind Pike Road . Georgia athletes dominated the middle distance and distance races. Ryder Garrett of Bleckley County won the 800 in 1:55.70, while another Georgia athlete, Jameson Pifer of Collins Hill High in Suwanee, ran away with the 1,600, winning in 4:05.17). Everett Lawder of Milton High won the 3,200 in 9:43.14. Meanwhile, UMS-Wright’s David Lott got wins in the pole vault and long jump . Other performances of note came from Gulf Shores’ Daniel Foster, who won the shot and Arab’s Christian Price, winner in the high jump . The girls has several strong performances as well. Gulf Shores’ Tevonna Campbell won the 60-meters , while Huffman’s Deryn Tilley won the 400 . Bleckley County’s Lilly Farrell won the 1,600 , while Lilly Overby of Simpson Academy won the 800 . Effie Ward of Harris County won the 3,200 in 11:13.73. Chelsea got double wins in the 4 X 200 and 4 X 400 . Bleckley County won the 4 X 800 .Northridge’s Jennings Hinz had a stellar performance at the Last Chance Meet #3 at the Birmingham CrossPlex on Saturday afternoon. Hinz won the 60-meter dash in 6.85, then won the long jump with a leap of 22-9 ¾. Hinz’s teammates, Shawn Stepenson and Anglin Young, won the 800 and 1,600 with times of 2:02.29 and 4:33.10 respectively. Central-Phenix City got a 1-2-finish in the boys’ 400 from Amaree Law and Darylan Farrish . The Red Devils also won the 4 X 200-meter relay in 1:29.52. Auburn High also had a strong performance in boys’ competition, winning the 4 X 400 and the 4 X 800 . Individually, the Tigers got first-place finishes from Bryan Collins in the triple jump , Riley Cuthbertson in the 3,200 , and Carnell Jackson in the shot put . Other notable first-place finishes came from Parker’s Jeremiah Jackson in the 60-meter hurdles , Marquise English of T.R. Miller in the high jump , and Altamont’s Thomas Langloh in the pole vault . Auburn had five first-place finishes in the girls’ division. Anne Morgan Howell cleared 10-6 in the pole vault, Victoria Weeden won the high jump , Katherine Lee won the 60-meter hurdles , Rylee Plexico in the 1,600 , and Holly McNeal in the 3,200 .Other notable first-place finishes came from Charles Henderson’s Payton Ousley in the 60-meter dash , Pinson Valley’s Jakayla Tamper in the 400 , Central-Phenix City’s Skyy Smith in the 800 , and Central-Tuscaloosa’s Alaysha Merriweather in the triple jump .The state indoor championships will be held on Friday and Saturday at the CrossPlex in Birmingham.
