SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Summary Pixar's movie Elemental includes several Easter eggs and references to the animated studio's past and future. Directed by Peter Sohn, Elemental is the 27th movie from Pixar.
The story follows Ember and Wade, two Fire and Water people who form an unexpected relationship and work together to solve a problem in Element City. It was met with a mostly positive critical reception, as indicated by Elemental's Rotten Tomatoes score, thanks to its charming, funny, and romantic story. But, there is also much more going on in the background that viewers might miss. Pixar has a great history of including various Easter eggs in their animated movies, and Elemental is no exception. The movie primarily focuses on the story at hand with Wade and Ember, but there are plenty of references to past Pixar movies included in the background for eagle-eyed viewers to catch. By the time Elemental's ending comes to a close, there are at least a dozen different callbacks and hidden details. Many of them can be difficult to spot and are only on the screen for a few seconds to increase the difficulty in finding them. Here is a guide to the Elemental Easter eggs and references found so far. 14 A Unique A113 Reference One of the earliest Elemental Easter eggs comes when a sign for the train is shown, as it includes a unique reference to A113. The meaning of A113 is connected to a classroom at CalArts that many at Pixar had classes in, including Elemental's director Peter Sohn. Pixar has a tendency to include a reference to the room number in some fashion in every single one of their movies. Elemental's reference to A113 comes in a unique form, as the movie uses the Periodic Table to help pull off the Easter egg. This is because the Element City sign reads "A" "H" and "Al." The H stands for Hydrogen, which has an atomic number of 1. The Al stands for Aluminum, which has an atomic number of 13. There is no element that only has an A, so that letter remains, meaning it reads as A113. For the purposes of Elemental's world, the A, H, and Al stand for stops on the train. But, Pixar historians know the real significance of the A113 reference. 13 A Wooden Pizza Planet Truck Elemental seemingly includes Pixar's most iconic Easter egg in a new way. A version of the Pizza Planet Truck retrofitted for Element City is featured early in the movie as Ember makes deliveries. She gets stuck behind a big wooden vehicle known as a Treeyota that is delivering logs of wood around the city. The car does not have any specific Pizza Planet logos on it based on what little of the vehicle is shown, but the Pizza Planet Truck typically is a Toyota. However, it does appear to be a clever riff on the iconic vehicle in a world where pizza does not exist, as evident by the "How's my driving?" bumper sticker. 12 Elemental's Second A113 Easter Egg There is also a more standard A113 Easter egg in Elemental that is similar in form to past Pixar movies. A113 is seen as the room number for the Department of Departments office in City Hall. It can be briefly seen in the background as Wade stumbles upon Ember, who is sleeping outside the door waiting to meet with the water department. This reference is still special as it is one of the rare instances where a Pixar movie used A113 as a room number, with The Incredibles and Monsters University being the other two examples. 11 The Pizza Planet Truck Elemental includes the Pizza Planet truck again but in a new way later on. Elemental's Pizza Planet truck Easter egg can be found in the background of a scene about halfway through the movie when Ember's mom Cinder follows her to Wade's family's apartment. While Cinder is outside, a boat version of the vehicle can be seen in the background. The yellow coloring and easy-to-spot white and red rocket on top make it clear this is meant to be the Pizza Planet Truck. Since this scene takes place in the Water District, though, the truck has been transformed into a boat. 10 Pixar's Next Movie Elio In addition to referencing some iconic previous movies and the history of the studio itself, Pixar also has a tendency to include an Easter egg for the next movie in each new release. That means Elemental has an Elio Easter egg considering the sci-fi space adventure hits theaters next in 2024. The most notable example comes through a brief flashback to Wade as a child when he was trapped in a sponge at school. There is a poster in the background that reads "Join the Space Club" and has a planet with tentacles, which has been seen in Elio's marketing. 9 A Secret Elio Character There is also a secret Elio character included as one of Elemental's Easter eggs. Producer Denise Ream confirmed in an interview with Eman's Movie Reviews pre-release that there is a character from the upcoming movie hidden somewhere in the movie. Considering how many alien races are going to be in Elio and the fact that the movie is not yet out, being able to spot this secret cameo is currently a bit difficult. It might not be until when Elemental releases on Disney Plus that the cameo is spotted, but the good news is that Ream already confirmed it is something worth keeping an eye out for. 8 Dug From Up Those who saw Elemental in theaters were treated to a new Pixar Short that acts as a follow-up to Up with Carl and Dug, but that is not the last time that the talking dog sidekick is seen. Pixar included the fan-favorite character in the new movie in a clever way. This comes through giving Dug a redesign that changes his fur to grass, making him a pet for one of the Land people. The familiar sighting is confirmed to be Up's Dug, as director Peter Sohn told EW that he is in the movie. 7 Partly Cloudy The element characters at play in Elemental might seem somewhat familiar to Pixar aficionados, as the Air people in many ways resemble the look of Gus, the main cloud featured in the 2009 Pixar Short Partly Cloudy. The similarities between Elemental's characters and Gus do not appear to be a coincidence considering Peter Sohn directed the short film. There is also a poster for Partly Cloudy featured at a movie theater Ember and Wade go to on their date, so a reference to the Pixar short is included more clearly as well. 6 The Good Dinosaur Peter Sohn's history at Pixar is also surely why references to The Good Dinosaur are included as Elemental Easter eggs. Sohn has a long career working for Pixar at a variety of levels, but 2015's The Good Dinosaur was his feature-length directorial debut. There are a few apparent references to the animated movie in Elemental, as a Flint and Stone comic at The Fireplace seemingly has Arlo on the cover and a poster for The Good Element is also at the movie theater. 5 Flagstone Tires The Cars franchise gets a special shout-out from Pixar through the inclusion of Flagstone Tires. The Elemental Easter egg can be seen as Flagstone Tires is shown on the signs in the stadium for the Windbreakers and Cropdusters' game. Flagstone Tires is a sponsor featured in the Cars movie. 4 Cropdusters Another potential Pixar Easter egg in Elemental is included by naming the Windbreakers' rival team the Cropdusters. While it is certainly another gas-related pun for the Air people's sports team, it might also be a sneaky reference to the character Dusty Crophopper in Planes. He is an orange Crop duster plane in the franchise, and the Cropdusters' orange jerseys make it more plausible that the connection is intentional. 3 Studio Ghibli Pixar's desire to reference its own movies does not mean that the studio is above honoring one of the greatest animation studios around, Studio Ghibli. Elemental references the studio known for making masterpieces like My Neighbor Totoro and Spirited Away by giving Wade's sister's girlfriend the name Ghibli. The Easter egg is the latest chapter in Disney's relationship with Studio Ghibli, as the company previously distributed Ghibli's films internationally. 2 Eat At Ralph's Cafe For Two Cents There is also a direct reference to late Pixar animator Ralph Eggleston in Elemental. This comes through the form of a restaurant called Eat At Ralph's Cafe, with the sign noting that it has breakfast specials for only two cents. Ralph Eggleston is a storied figure at Pixar who helped Peter Sohn get his first job at the studio with Finding Nemo, but he passed away in 2022 after battling pancreatic cancer. Sohn told EW he included the nod to Eggleston as a way to remember the Pixar legend, who would commonly say his two cents about different movies. 1 Elemental Honors Former Pixar Employees Ralph Eggleston is not the only former Pixar employee honored in the 2023 movie. Before Elemental's post-credits, there is a tribute to Eggleston, Thomas Gonzales, Amber Martorelli, and J. Garrett Sheldrew. Thomas Gonzales was Pixar's Assistant Editor for 19 years before passing away in May 2022 after fighting cancer. Amber Matroelli was a Pixar animator for 8 years and passed away in September 2022. J. Garrett Sheldrew was a story artist for Pixar for 14 years and passed away in September 2022. They are the last names shown in Elemental's credits excluding Sohn's dedication to his parents.
