Did fans uncover a major Easter egg?

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Steven Maeda, showrunner of Netflix's One Piece live-action series, responds to a fan theory about the potential sneaky appearance of a major villain from the anime.

One Piece premiered on Netflix on August 31 and is a live-action adaptation of the anime and manga of the same name. Given that it is one of the longest-running anime and manga series of all time, the new show had quite a bit of material to pull from. As a result, the live-action One Piece is riddled with Easter eggs, and some fans believe they may have spotted a particularly big one. In an interview with IGN, Maeda addressed the major fan theory that the One Piece villain Crocodile is hidden in the show's opening. The scene shows Gold Roger's execution, witnessed by younger versions of several characters, and fans believe they spotted what might be a gender-swapped younger version of Crocodile. Maeda acknowledged the theory and encouraged viewers to interpret these things however they wished. Check out his statement below: I have heard that. I've been approached about that issue before, and all I have to say is, read into it what you like. A lot of thought was put into the Easter eggs. And some of it is future planning, and a lot of it was: 'Hey, wouldn't it be cool if we saw this character?' We know that character was there in the background of, particularly Loguetown at Gold Roger's execution. So a lot of thought was put into bounty posters and seeing characters in the crowd. And then also our art department and production designers did a lot of the signage and things that are stencilled onto barrels and shop names and things like that. There was a lot of love and care put into pulling stuff forward so that for fans, they could go: 'Oh, hey, that's really cool.' And some of it is with thought toward the future. Others of it is just a fun thing to do that fans are really going to enjoy. Could The Crocodile Be In The Live-Action One Piece? The One Piece fan theory about Crocodile is quite interesting, as it suggests that Crocodile is a woman in the live-action adaptation despite being male in the anime. Some came to this conclusion because One Piece recreated the execution scene from the anime, showing characters like Shanks and Mihawk in similar positions and with similar expressions to their anime counterparts. Crocodile is present in the scene in the anime, and the closest viewers could find to his character in live-action was the woman with one earring. The theory isn't so far-fetched considering One Piece might have a good reason to gender-swap Crocodile. This is because another fan theory about the original Crocodile character is that he may be transgender or intersex. This arose because of teases about him having a weakness or secret from his mysterious past that could surface again. Given that another character, Ivankov, has the ability to alter one's gender, some suspect that Crocodile was assigned female at birth and changed to male with Ivankov's abilities. Meanwhile, his "weakness" is that Ivankov has the ability to change him back to female if he chose so. This theory hasn't been confirmed, but many noticed that One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda made Crocodile's design as a child very androgynous, meaning the theory hasn't been wholly disproven yet. Meanwhile, it would be very interesting if One Piece translated the magna villain to live-action in such a way to subtly confirm the theory. For now, One Piece's showrunner isn't confirming or denying the theory, so viewers can continue to muse over it and find their own interpretations of the show's many Easter eggs.
