Who was Thusnelda?
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The Germanic warrior Thusnelda in Netflix’s Barbarians is actually based on a real-life figure. Barbarians is a German-language historical war drama that takes a fictionalized look at the Roman Empire’s invasion of Germania at the start of the first millennium.
Arminius is a member of the Cherusci tribe but was sent to Rome as a hostage when he was young. Upon his return to Germania, Arminius sees the atrocities committed by the Roman soldiers and leads an uprising alongside Thusnelda against the invaders. It’s an epic drama in the same vein as other great historical TV shows where myth and reality are intertwined. Real people from ancient history are featured prominently in Barbarians. Arminius, whose strength of character and natural charisma make him more believable as a video game character than an actual historical figure, is a real man. Thusnelda, Segestes , and Segimer are all historical names who, along with the astonishing production and costume design, give a striking authenticity to Barbarians, even if the facts themselves are not always the most accurate. As one of these real-life figures, Thusnelda plays an important role in the history depicted and in Barbarians' plot and relationships.Thusnelda Was A Germanic Cheruscan Noblewoman Thusnelda was a real woman from Germania and a noblewoman in the Germanic Cherusci tribe . Arminius captured Thusnelda and forced her into marriage, conceiving a son with her. The pregnant Thusnelda was then captured by Germanicus Julius Ceasar, commander of the invasion of Germania, driving Arminius into a grief that he never recovered from . Thusnelda's father, a Roman collaborator allowed his daughter to be taken to Rome, and it was there she and her newborn son, Thumelicus, were paraded through the streets during Germanicus’ triumph, a symbol of his victory in Germania. Thusnelda Is A Germanic Warrior In Barbarians Thusnelda in Barbarians has a very different story from her real-life counterpart. In the series, Thusnelda is a warrior in the Cherusci tribe who is respected for her ferocity and wisdom. She is not afraid to use rumors that she is a seer to her advantage as well, going so far as to cut her own eye out, as Odin did in mythology. When Arminius returns from Rome he becomes the Reik of Cherusci but is still not trusted because of his Roman upbringing. Seeing an opportunity to unite the Germanic tribes against Rome, Thusnelda, respected among the tribes, marries Arminius in order to properly tie him to the tribes. Thusnelda and Arminius both begin their relationship recognizing that it is only a political match, but as the series continues, they develop real romantic feelings for one another. Together they have a child, Thumelicus, but in Barbarians, it’s implied that her son’s father is Folkwin Wolfspeer , a fictional character. The end of season 2 sees Thusnelda being dragged away, along with her son, to Rome. Both the real-life and fictional Thusnelda may have similarities in their story, but they are ultimately very different. Thusnelda in Barbarians is a powerful, fictional version of the Germanic noblewoman but the reality is that in that time period, Thusnelda wouldn’t have had the agency to make every decision for herself, and she was ultimately a victim of war and violence.
