Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica in Dune: Part Three

Dune: Part Three's trailer offered a tantalizing first look at Denis Villeneuve's trilogy capper, providing glimpses of major moments and characters slated to be in the sequel. This includes franchise mainstays in Paul Atreides , Chani , Lady Jessica , and Stilgar .

But Dune 3 also includes several new characters. Paul and Chani's children are set to appear in some fashion. Robert Pattinson is on board as the villainous Scytale. Jason Momoa is back, this time playing Hayt, essentially a revived and altered Duncan Idaho, while Anya Taylor-Joy gets to properly step into Alia Atreides' shoes after her Dune: Part Two cameo. Getting to see all of them in the Dune 3 trailer was a highlight, but there is one character who is pivotal in the book Villenueve is adapting, Dune Messiah, whose presence in the film remains a mystery. Edric Hasn't Been Confirmed For Dune 3, But Is Necessary For The Story One of the biggest characters in Dune Messiah is a fish-looking alien named Edric. He is a Spacing Guild Navigator who Herbert's book describes as "an elongated figure, vaguely humanoid with finned feet and hugely fanned membranous hands." Edric is always confined to a container filled with orange gas, which he needs to survive. The fishy alien is central to the plot of Messiah, as he's one of the key conspirators against Paul's reign as emperor. Edric is also a prescient being, which means that Paul is unable to see his actions . This makes him a natural protective shield from Maud'Dib's visions, allowing Irulan, Scytale, and others to plot freely. Edric's major role in the book has long made his inclusion a question hanging over Villeneuve's Dune movies. He will be the strangest character the franchise has introduced , as these films have not veered away from human characters or those that would, presumably, be fully CGI. But with Dune 3 not confirming Edric's appearance this whole time , uncertainty about whether he is in the movie remains. He is a vital part of the Messiah story, so even if Villeneuve also incorporates elements of Children of Dune with this third film, removing Edric would force significant changes and risk irritating fans. And if you've watched the Dune 3 trailer, a fish humanoid alien is nowhere to be plainly seen. Rather than take this as a sign that Villeneuve has cut Edric from the story, there's a good chance the footage cleverly hid him in plain sight to preserve the surprise of his look and role until closer to release, if not until audiences are watching the movie for the first time. Dune 3's Trailer Has Multiple Potential Edric Sightings A closer look at the Dune 3 trailer with Edric in mind makes a few moments stand out as possible glimpses of his involvement. The one that has received the most attention is the shot above, where a tall, floating container follows Scytale into a room. Who or what is inside is not seen, only that there is an orange/red hue to where someone's face could be. This may be a more easily transportable version of Edric's tank, with the humanoid fish inside. Edric and Scytale are together frequently in the book as they plot against Paul, so this could be them arriving at one of their covert meetings. However, there has also been speculation that this item contains Hayt, with Scytale preparing to offer Paul the ghoula. If this is Hayt and not Edric, then I'd offer a shot from later in the trailer as a potential glimpse of the strange character. Unknown figures are shown escorting a large container into the Keep as Alia sits on the throne. If Villeneuve went for a larger look for Edric and his tank, then perhaps the moment below is him. Perhaps neither of these is Edric. But if that's the case, then all hope is still not lost. There is a shot of a small spaceship flying toward what looks like one of the Spacing Guild's Hieghliners. There's even another quick shot of a different black ship docking into something. Both of these moments could be Edric or his fellow consirators arriving for one of their meetings where he'd be present. It's still possible that Dune: Part Three leaves out its fishy humanoid alien, but if Messiah is really Villeneuve's favorite book in the series, as he's claimed, then leaving out someone as important as Edric would be surprising.
