After blowing past expectations in its opening weekend, Project Hail Mary defied the odds again in its sophomore frame. The sci-fi epic remains the number one choice for moviegoers across the globe, and has now recouped its reported $200 million budget while overtaking a handful of past hits along the way.
The movie, based on a bestselling novel by Andy Weir, stars Ryan Gosling as an astronaut who finds himself on an intergalactic mission with no memory of how he got there. In addition to being the biggest theatrical film of Gosling's career, Project Hail Mary marked the directorial comeback of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, whose previous movie was released over a decade ago. The movie opened to excellent reviews and is now perched at a"Certified Fresh" 95% critics' score and a"Verified Hot" 96% audience score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. The site's consensus reads,"A visually dazzling space odyssey that's carried along effortlessly by the gravitational pull of Ryan Gosling at his most winning, Project Hail Mary is a near-miraculous fusion of smarts and heart." The movie outgrossed The Martian, the blockbuster adaptation of Weir's earlier bestseller, and continues to track ahead of it at the box office. The Martian, starring Matt Damon and directed by Ridley Scott, grossed $630 million worldwide in its theatrical run around a decade ago. Project Hail Mary is halfway there. At this rate, overtaking The Martian is a foregone conclusion. With $54 million this past weekend, Project Hail Mary also delivered a greater second-weekend haul domestically than past hits such as Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer , Alfonso Cuarón's Gravity , and Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Part Two . In the coming days, Gosling's stunning new hit will also pass the lifetime worldwide haul of Nolan's Tenet, which ended its run with around $360 million in 2020. Project Hail Mary has already overtaken Gosling's own Blade Runner 2049 and First Man, and is on track to pass La La Land this coming weekend.
